Forums - Nintendo - What do you think are Nintendo's realistic expectations/plans going forward with the WiiU?

I have 0 faith in Iwatas ability to do anything worth a shit. Dont get your hopes up until there is regime change.

Unfortunately it looks like iwata has got caught in the success of his strategy in the Wii/DS generation and refuses to change strategy’s. It will most likely end with him being dragged out kicking and screaming. However this may not be a good thing since we may end up with a money obsessed CEO who's strategy is to only churn out F2p games for mobile platforms (Thank You Mario, But Our Princess is in Another Castle pay 5$ to continue ).

I think they guage the impact of Mariokart, then plot a course. Sales are up about 100% yoy, if Mariokart pushes things up further still, I would expect them to push forward with titles, price cuts, etc. If sales decline, they shift focus to something new sooner than planned. Regardless, I think they are already readying there next products, including a known QOL device, a likely tablet and the next home console which will likely be something very different... Or something very similar to PS4/One...but not in the middle like Wii U.

Nope. Down YOY.

Up in US 8k, down in Japan 50k, Europe we don't know.

Im not sure how or where you're getting your numbers, but VG's newest Yoy chart has Wii u up 7.7% as of March 8th, unless i am missing something.

Mediacreate = down 50k yoy

NPD = up yoy 8k for Jan/Feb.

Europe as I said we just have VGC estimates, but it sells really low there anyway.

I see, could you link the Medicreate numbers i never got to read them, thanks!

91k vs 41k I think.

I found and added up this years numbers from Media Create.  #141,296 from 12/30/2013 to 3/16/2014, i still need to look up last years sales. It will probably take a few minutes.

EDIT: i corrected the numbers after recounting them!!!!

They'll ride it out like the Gamecube. Dropping support now would only cause people to hestitate on getting the next one.

I personally think that games like Mario Kart, Bayo 2, Smash, Sonic Boom, X , Hyrule Warriors etc will help move a lot more systems, especially around the holidays. Hopefully those games, added to the top tier titles already on the system will keep the sales more consistent on a weekly basis. I think 25 million is still do-able, not what Ninty wanted but at least end the gen on a positive note having salvaged something of the Wii U wreckage with profits intact. I dont see a Wii U successor for at least another 4 years, there are still many avenues to explore with Wii U than to throw in the towel just yet, im interested to see if anything happens with the Gamepads NFC features, and what gamepad focused games Miyamoto and his team have been told to work on.

mario kart sells consoles along the time. watchdogs wont do nothing to mario kart.
i dont expect big sales in the first week for mario kart, with or without watchdogs.

If Nintendo supported the Gamecube throughout its lifecycle i can't see them dropping the Wii U Anytime soon. I'd say we have another 4 to 5 years with the Wii U.

That was a different time. The Gamecube didn't make a loss did it? The SW seemed to sell quite well, the hardware definitely so.

Well the Wii U isn't being sold at a loss any longer though either right and earlier in its life it only needed the buyer to pick up 1 game to become profitable, so as i see it yes the Wii U may be selling lower then the other 2 but profit is still profit right? Throw the 3DS into the mix and i can't see Nintendo doing anything dramatic.

I do wonder why software sales are much lower then the Gamecube though...

Do you have a source for that? Last time I heard it was still making a loss, and this "buy one game" ect rubbish does not negate a loss leading strategy.

No source i sorta just figured because as time goes on hardware costs go down and in a year and a half i would think costs would have dropped quite abit by now but that's just my opinion not facts. Maybe i should have added that to my last post, sorry about that.

The WiiU is done, dead, and soon to be buried. I'm expecting a new console in 2015, 2016 at the latest. I'm not sure why some people are against the WiiU being quickly replaced, what's the point of a console that only gets 3 or 4 major releases a year? The GBA had a 3 year lifecycle and it was never in the position that the WiiU was. No reason to keep supporting a product that just isn't catching on.

It's not dead...

Smash is coming out in a few months, people will buy the U just for that game, I know personally a few people, and I've heard it before about the Wii, people bought it just for Brawl.

I suspect many will buy the U also for Mario Kart, and that the next Zelda will be an important game in the series.

The U is not dead, it's just not going to get a lot of key games for it. Those that will come out for it are not less important still.

Sure Mario Kart and Smash Bros will move a few systems, but I don't think it's going to have the effect you're expecting. The 3DS version of Smash Bros will cannibalize the WiiU version, especially in Japan where they're obsessed with handhelds. Nintendo should have released the WiiU and 3DS versions a year apart, no sense releasing them at the same time. Mario Kart is coming out around the same time as Watch Dogs, which if it lives up to the hype, will overshadow it. At best Nintendo's 1st party output will push the console to Gamecube sales.

The GBA comparison is perhaps the most vaild one I've heard yet.

Similarities of the two:

-While an OK piece of hardware, it could be better.

-While there are good games, there could (and should) easily be even more.

-Just isn't contributing enough to Nintendo's success.

-Worth owning if you like some specific games, but if you miss it, you won't be missing terribly much

The WiiU is not the new Dreamcast. It's not the new Virtual Boy. It's new GBA. That's a comparison I believe can be reasonably shared by most.

A tip of my hat to you sir!

GBA was not even close to being a "moderate" success. It sold over 81m before being discontinued in Japan in 2006, EU in 2007, and NA in 2008.. while being replaced by the DS 3 years into its life cycle. That's pretty impressive honestly. Not to mention the Game Boy Advance contributed greatly to Nintendo's profits while the GameCube floundered and disappointed. Wii U hasn't contributed anything other than disappointement to Nintendo's financials since its launch, so I really don't think you can call it the new GBA. If anything, it's the new GameCube.

Plus I don't think the DS immediately replaced the GBA more than it being a third pillar. I remember the GBA still receiving games and remodels even after the DS released afterall.
