Im not sure how or where you're getting your numbers, but VG's newest Yoy chart has Wii u up 7.7% as of March 8th, unless i am missing something.

Mediacreate = down 50k yoy

NPD = up yoy 8k for Jan/Feb.

Europe as I said we just have VGC estimates, but it sells really low there anyway.

The WiiU is done, dead, and soon to be buried. I'm expecting a new console in 2015, 2016 at the latest. I'm not sure why some people are against the WiiU being quickly replaced, what's the point of a console that only gets 3 or 4 major releases a year? The GBA had a 3 year lifecycle and it was never in the position that the WiiU was. No reason to keep supporting a product that just isn't catching on.

What I would try if I was in charge of Nintendo would be money hatting 3rd party's for exclusives like ( DQ 11,Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate HD, tales of, Shin Megami Tensei V,etc) alongside gaining as many ports of western games as possible and a massive marketing push aimed at core gamers as well as adding Wii,Gamecube,Nintendo 64,DS,Game Boy/Color, Sega Mega Drive / Genesis,Sega Master System,Sega Game Gear,Neo Geo,Neo Geo Pocket Color and Virtual Console Arcade to virtaul console. Then if that doesn’t work just coast by for the rest of the generation and make a more focussed system next gen.

It's not dead...

Smash is coming out in a few months, people will buy the U just for that game, I know personally a few people, and I've heard it before about the Wii, people bought it just for Brawl.

I suspect many will buy the U also for Mario Kart, and that the next Zelda will be an important game in the series.

The U is not dead, it's just not going to get a lot of key games for it. Those that will come out for it are not less important still.

Sure Mario Kart and Smash Bros will move a few systems, but I don't think it's going to have the effect you're expecting. The 3DS version of Smash Bros will cannibalize the WiiU version, especially in Japan where they're obsessed with handhelds. Nintendo should have released the WiiU and 3DS versions a year apart, no sense releasing them at the same time. Mario Kart is coming out around the same time as Watch Dogs, which if it lives up to the hype, will overshadow it. At best Nintendo's 1st party output will push the console to Gamecube sales.

A lot of hopes, prayers, and cash. Some tinkering with the WiiU OS. Finding a good partner to help build and market their next generation of hardware.

Pray that MK8, Bayo 2, SSB, X, Zelda U, Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, Starfox, F-Zero and a Pokemon game do something to increase the userbase.

Pay Warner Bros/Travellers Tales for another WiiU exclusive title, probably Lego City Undercover 2.

Do a huge joint marketing effort with Ubisoft to lift the Just Dance series.

Capture the attention of indie developers (they're doing that reasonably well actually). Greenlight and fund key releases, like Shadows of the Eternals.

Do Pro Controller game bundles. Pay $60 and you get the Pro Controller + say DKC : TF, or TW101, or Rayman Legends. Something they want to sell in larger numbers. Or further cut the price of the Pro Controller.

Price cuts.

Implement a PS+ style service.

Reduce footprint of the WiiU OS while giving it better features (system wide party chat, accessing friends list faster, Twitch, etc).

Partner with a major tech company for their next console/tablet/handheld hybrid console.

I think the WiiU OS could be licensed as a Smart TV OS. You'd have digital-only console. You could have the TV manufacturer add more storage natively. Retail the download codes.

You are thinking about this like a Playstation fan, that's why you are having trouble seeing it at face value.

Remember, on Nintendo's market, Watch Dogs is relatively unimportant. Their buyers typically value Mario Kart much more than they do Watch Dogs, in general.

On Sony's market, sure Watch Dogs will eclipse other entries coming out during the same period.

As for Smash, Japan at best consists of 35% of the sales (in more modern eras ~20%), but of late Smash has sold primarily in North America, which is the U's weakest region at the moment and where a system seller like Smash could make the biggest splash (no rhyme intended):

So the release of Smash on the 3DS affecting japan sales should have little impact on Smash's system selling potential in NA and EU.

Ok? I said Smash Bros will move a few systems. I'm not sure what exactly you're disagreeing with. I never said it was going to bomb in North America and Europe. I just don't see it pushing the WiiU passed Gamecube numbers.

The GBA comparison is perhaps the most vaild one I've heard yet.

Similarities of the two:

-While an OK piece of hardware, it could be better.

-While there are good games, there could (and should) easily be even more.

-Just isn't contributing enough to Nintendo's success.

-Worth owning if you like some specific games, but if you miss it, you won't be missing terribly much

The WiiU is not the new Dreamcast. It's not the new Virtual Boy. It's new GBA. That's a comparison I believe can be reasonably shared by most.
