Forums - Sony - PlayStation's free-to-play business is booming

I hoped that all the F2P games on the PS4 will find success for their developers so I'm really glad to hear that. And I for one really like the business model if done right (SW TOR, Planetside 2, Moba's, current PS4 F2P games) hopefully Deep Down won't also have some extremely intrusive microtransactions on every corner, but Capcom doe ;_;

So it is happening...PS4 preorder.

Greatness Awaits!

Free to play revenue up 50%

The irony.

Free to play is a misnomer.  Its a disguise for transactions that will often cost the consumer more money in  the end.

Its actually a very dishonest title for the method of delivery.

spent a few hours on warframe, didnt cost me a cent.

paying is a choice.

Same. "Free to play" means exactly that. It's free to play the game. It costs you no money to download the game and play it. Just because a game has microtransactions doesn't mean you have to buy those items. And often times, the items that you pay for are stuff you can eventually get if you, you know....play the game a little bit, as opposed to wanting the most powerful gun/sword from the moment you start playing.

Warframe is actually a very good example: every primary, secondary, and melee weapon and every Warframe can be built if you just put some time into the game. Sure, you could spend $15-20 on Platinum in order to get the best guns and best Warframes immediately, but that's your own fault if you don't wanna do what video games are meant for; to be played.

"Over 90 percent of PS4s connected to the Internet"

Wow, that is surprising. I am the 10%!

Since you pay money for free to play games, the best free to play games imo are the free to play PS+ games for $50 a year.

But Microsoft selling people's personal information is perfectly fine.

OT: That's good, I can't wait to play Planetside 2 on PS4. Everything I've heard about the game sounds amazing.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

Of course it is. They might as well make a profit while f*cking people over :D

OT: Anyway, good news i suppose. Still have very little interest in FTP games. I find they often either tern into "Pay to Win" or "Free or a pain in the ass".

There's nothing dishonest about the term "free-to-play" and most poeple understand immediately what to expect when they get into a game labelled as such. Free to play the game from start to finish and over again, HOWEVER, there are purchase options to make things more aestheticly pleasing or easier in the game (such as getting items much sooner, or special optional items you can only get for money, or the game's ad supported). That doesn't make the game any less free. You can succeed and enjoy the game without spending a dime.

Team Fortress 2 is a great example of the Free-to-Play business model. It's easy to spend thousands of dollars in that game. I have a friend that spend 150$ in a single night just opening crates that he's collected. At the same time, another person can unlock every single item in the game without spending any cash if they choose to put the required time in.

4 ≈ One

good news for Sony, I can't believe some people still don't understand yet how real free to play games work, the biggest game right now on the industry is free to play (League of legends)

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

I really like the idea of free to play if it's done right. If it's riddled with microtransactions it begins to lose its fun, but a good example of a good free to play is Warframe on PS4. I have already spent 10 hours in co-op with a friend doing some missions and am thinking about paying maybe $5 or so to support the game.
