Now that EA has secured the rights to Titanfall 2 (and probably all sequels to that) how many Titanfalls will there be this gen?

I'm talking main games, not inevitable spinoffs.

I think EA might start alternating between Battlefield and Titanfall in the holiday season, so half of however many years this gen lasts

I think we'll see Titanfall 2 in late 2016, 3 in late 2018, 4 in late 2020 (which would also be on PS5 and Xbox?), so 4.

You may be forgetting about the Star Wars Battlefront series.  I think EA mentioned  a 3 year cycle between the 3.  So I will say 3, 2014-2017-2020 (will be current gen and next gen)

Maybe, but Titanfall and Battlefield must make them a lot of money, and unless they mess up Star Wars that's gonna make them a load of money as well.  Even though alternating all three would make sense to get the quality of the games to a higher standard, I think they will find the cash too tempting
