For art and ads they're cool but for everything else it's just the public's obsession with star wars that makes "holodecks" a popular desire. VR and light field displays like actual holograms are a million times better.

Woah man, holodecks are from Star Trek. Don't confuse the two. Star Trek is the one that adults watch non-nostalgically, Star Wars is the time machine to recapture the feeling of being 7 unshaven 30 year olds enjoy.
