Definately MS since they created the first, truly functional online community (yes, Sega was first on Saturn and Dreamcast but even I find it crap :)), introducing achievements, probably making the indie scene as big as it is now, introducing the best controller of all time and also introducing true, controller free motion controls.

Sony did online before MS, and best part is that it was free...

Sony had hands free gaming on ps2...

MS controller is the worst controller i've ever played with at all...

In any case most of what you said is a matter of opinion... MS definately improved on certain things really well, but they haven't really innovated anything except maybe doing more with a console than just gaming. Again though Sony was the first to bring multimedia to gaming consoles with a dvd player built in... So really what has MS innovated at all if anything? TV input(which really is a step backwards not forwards)

--Nintendo first for showing that the industry can still grow and expand in more creative ways than just graphics...

Sony second for always doing more of the front running of new technologies, dvd/blu-ray/multimedia, online gaming, no controller gaming (ps2 had this)... Sony has done more than any other console in terms of new features and technologies first.

Distant third to MS Xbox as they just follow what other people do, but have greatly improved upon what others have done before them (most of the time anyways)

You do know that all we give here is opinions, right? Besides, Sega was way ahead of sony when is comes to online gaming, but it is thanks to MS (in my opinion you know :)) that online gaming is where it´s at today. You believe a little too much in sony, they are great, but in this regard both MS and Nintendo has done far more to innovate and push the industry forward.

The Blu-Ray is nothing "innovative" at all.

Developers had more storage room at their fingertips.....it is the extension of the CD medium.

Now, multimedia capabilities on the other hand would count somewhat....but those started with the PS2....or PSX/ Mega CD (music) .

As a PS1-PS4 owner, I'd say in the last decade it would likely be MS due to spearheading online gaming on consoles, achievements, and making consoles more of a multimedia box. I know Sega and PS2 had online but it wasn't a primary focus. It's a shame MS made the mistake of thinking Kinect was the future of gaming, they messed up big time on Kinect and just kept pushing it on gamers and now they're suffering for it.

Currently Sony is innovating a lot more though and have taken MS ideas like Live and achievements and made them better with Plus and trophies.

If the author said the last twenty years I'd say Sony, but the last 10 are definitely MS.

mmm imo is a close call betwen MS and Sony

MS.- Online gaming on consoles, kinect (sigh), XBLA, all in one machine

Sony.- Blu-ray, games (new ips and genres), 3d (sigh), all in one machine (yeap, just like MS), Sixaxis (sigh)

IMO Nintendo is far behind when it comes to innovation, they make mtion controllers mainstream, but aside from that, is an old school company that relies heavily on nostalgia (not a bad thing imo). Besides motion controller is becoming pretty irrelevant nowadays

It always amazes me how different the poll opinions and the forum post opinions are.

Lurkers outweigh dedicated forum users.

OP: Microsoft. Online gaming, achievements, controller design, live, etc.

MS innovation really only applies to Kinect/body imaging and achievements.

Sony innovation really is non-existant. Controls same. Move is copy of Wiimote. Online/power is natural extension of last gen and what MS did. Bluray isn't a gaming concept or innovative as MS360 did same games on DVDs.

Nintendo had multiple innovations that have been continued and expanded by others and themselves.
1) dual and touch screen combined with buttons. (DS series and WiiU)
2) motion controls (ms innovated on top Wii by adding intelligent camera)
3) 3D glass-less gaming (3DS really did it right, its just proven to not be a big thing)
4) social connection (miiverse > than just adding in fb/tw)

For those that say Sony did motion before Nintendo with the Eye Toy, I say: Power Glove of 1989

in which both are stupid arguments as Wii Mote is first to do it in a meaningful manner that drove the industry design.

I think the results r in the right order.

It's hard to say. I'd say Nintendo's contribution is more obvious though, with the Wii mote and Gamepad.
