I've been thinking about this today. Some people think having a 3ds version will kill the wii u version but I disagree. I think Nintendo is onto something with these 3ds ports of wii u games or vice versa. I think the wii u one will sell amazing down the stretch but not initially. So in the meantime they can get cheap easy profit from 3ds one. Also, I think the differences (stages, trophies, art style, controls) will actually make a lot of people buy both versions, including me, and that is where they will make insane profit. I think Nintendo is going to make redundant money off these games with people buying both versions for the unique features. I predict these games will have one of the most redundant ratios of ported games ever! Your thoughts?

I agree. I think people are underestimating the amount of fans willing to buy both.

This is the same problem with TitanFall. Smash is supposed to be a system seller, by putting it on the 3DS it prioritizes the sales of the game rather than the sales of the hardware.

This directly contradicts Nintendo's "Software sells hardware" mentality. Don't be suprised, when Nintendo goes multiplat because its finacially intellegent.

Are you saying you think SSB4 wont still sell systems? Maybe not as many Wii Us will move, but 3DS will get a boost too, this I guarantee!

They're kinda cannibalizing their own market for short term gain though.

A person who has a 3DS would probably be right to ask "why should I buy a Wii U? I get Mario Kart, Mario 3D, Mario 2D, Smash Bros., Zelda, DKC on my 3DS that gives me my Nintendo franchise fix, I'm not spending $300 on another console for the same franchises".

Also I really do think both NSMB2 and NSMBU were hurt by being released so close to each other.

True but being as both are different games and SSB is a home console title i doubt it'll have a huge effect if 3DS didn't have a version

OFC Smash will sell systems. The problem is its giving the 3DS a boost, you know, the last console in this generation that needs one right now? When the Wii U is getting lapped despite its year lead, you don't think it needs all the help it can get?

MS would've made TitanFall an XB1 exclusive if they could cause they don't need to move 360s now, but EA and Respawn wouldn't have that, but this is Nintendo's game. Its understandable to want software sales but this is really short sighted.

I'm 95% sure the decision was made when the 3DS was struggling early on and the Wii U was still doing its launch wel since there was no competition, back then it made sense to boost the 3DS.

But this is not the time right now.

I'll probablly get both versions, but when we're running out of games to save the Wii U with, why take away more?

The 3DS isn't selling because of magic, it's selling because of games! Take those away and it'll sell just as it did before SM3DL and MK7, which was not very good. And seeing as Wii U's 2014 line-up >>>>>>> 3DS's 2014 line-up, it definitely does need this!

And good I didn't even have to bring up the fact that this decision was made while the 3DS was struggling! You could say "well they should of thought about the long term," but come on who woulda expected the Wii U to sell this badly! The promise of a 3DS version was made, and they have to follow through with it. Unless they wanna throw away time and resources and piss off a lot of people, then they can't just cancel the 3DS version at this point, just like they wont abandon the Wii U despite it's doomed status.

Also, as SM3DW + other games + price cut + new bundles + advertising + holidays have shown, the Wii U is far beyond the point of saving. Even if SSB4 was exclusive, the situation would remain unchanged. It's better to just get as much profit out of the game as they can and use said profit to better their next console.

A shame Nintendo won't ever do cross-buy. But no, I don't think the WiiU version will sell well.

You know how much Melee sold right? Sure, this one's multiplatform and the Wii U is currently doing worse than the GCN ever was, but I'd still expect 5 million minimum for the Wii U version.
