This looks like a standard controller to you?
It's... erm... different.

Is it so that it correlates with XB 360 control pad supported PC games? As that'd likely be the colour code used on on screen prompts.
It feels uninspired but going with XYAB is the logical choice. Pretty much every modern PC game with controller support uses that format. Using something else would be confusing for most gamers.
Honestly, what I want from a PC controller is MOAR BUTTONS. That's where controllers fail. In Fallout games, I have TEN keys mapped to weapons and it still feels constrained. In WoW ... well, let's just say half my keyboard was mapped to skills, which is why WoW can never work on home consoles.
I actually thought the Wii U had the most perfect idea for PC games like this, where the controller would allow you (or the game developers) to create programmable "buttons" on the touchscreen which mimic PC keys. Heck, instead of saying F1 or whatever, the keys could even have real labels, like "Wpn 1". That's one of the first things I thought when I saw the game-pad and why it would be awesome for RPGs and MMOs that use a LOT of skills.
If I had the chance to make the perfect PC controller, honestly, it would be something like what the Wii U has.

Compared to how they originally made it and how much they tried to hype it as a revolution in controllers. Yes, it does.
I am the Playstation Avenger.

So is it official now?
Touch-pads on controllers were an unsuccessful fad.

Welcome to 1993 :D some games would include plastic sheets, that would cover the numeric pad with icons etc relating to the function they performed in the game.
I think the Steam controller should've taken some cues from the Wii U gamepad. Not making it cumbersome but adaptable; add a touch screen where you could map the extra buttons. Or where a talented modder can add a custom menu for games that are limited by traditional controllers.
