It feels uninspired but going with XYAB is the logical choice. Pretty much every modern PC game with controller support uses that format. Using something else would be confusing for most gamers.
Honestly, what I want from a PC controller is MOAR BUTTONS. That's where controllers fail. In Fallout games, I have TEN keys mapped to weapons and it still feels constrained. In WoW ... well, let's just say half my keyboard was mapped to skills, which is why WoW can never work on home consoles.
I actually thought the Wii U had the most perfect idea for PC games like this, where the controller would allow you (or the game developers) to create programmable "buttons" on the touchscreen which mimic PC keys. Heck, instead of saying F1 or whatever, the keys could even have real labels, like "Wpn 1". That's one of the first things I thought when I saw the game-pad and why it would be awesome for RPGs and MMOs that use a LOT of skills.
If I had the chance to make the perfect PC controller, honestly, it would be something like what the Wii U has.
