Forums - Gaming Discussion - VGChartz's Best-Selling Console Games of Gen 8: Updated Weekly!

i think NSMBWiiU will overtake COD Ghosts again. Isnt it bundled?

NSMBU is now widely, but not universally, bundled with the Wii U. Hence, it should sell about 1/2 to 2/3 as well every week as the Wii U hardware does until bundles change, likely this May when Mario Kart 8 comes out.

That said, I'm not sure if NSMBU can overtake Ghosts anytime soon. Between the three 8th gen consoles, CoD Ghosts sells roughly 50,000 copies a week. The Wii U is currently only selling at about 30,000 to 40,000 a week, with NSMBU selling only around 20,000 weekly.

Ghosts' sales will likely plummet within the next year when CoD 11 comes out, but time will tell if NSMBU remains constant for long enough to eventually overtake it again. It would require the Wii U eventually being significantly more popular than it is now, NSMBU remaining the primary bundled game for the Wii U's duration, or both. Possible, but hard to say either way.

Including digital sales, probably. However, for the most part, VGChartz only tracks retail sales. Consideringhow WWHD was a digital exclusive for a couple of weeks, that could easily explain the difference.

fair enough

I'm adding three Regional Top 10 Lists to the OP: North America, Europe, and Japan. Though not as extensive as the Worldwide Top 20, I plan on also updating these weekly.

Notes for April 5, 2014

  • Today was not as dramatic a week as last was, but there were still changes. Most notable was Need for Speed:Rivals overtaking Wii Party U for the #13 spot and Infamous: Second Son overtaking LEGO Marvel Super Heroes for the #17 spot. However, no games entered or thus left the Top 20.
  • Only two games remain with under 1 million sales. Next week, barring something weird, only Wind Waker HD will be left. That said, Wind Waker HD WILL manage a million sales, even if its kicked off the table by the time that happens. It's already 90% of the way there and is still selling thousands of copies a week.
  • Titanfall is now the #2 best-selling Xbox One game, bigger than Battlefield 4. Only Call of Duty: Ghosts remains ahead. However, assuming Titanfall continues to sell about 60,000 more units a week than Ghosts for the near future, Titanfall should be the #1 XBone game sometime in May, making the PS4 the only 8th gen console that has a multiplat at #1.
  • Below the Top 20, Ground Zeroes is threatening to eventually overtake Wind Waker HD, despite the former's sizeable PS3 sales. Rayman Legends is approaching half a million sales on 8th gen consoles alone. Thief is not moving anywhere quickly.
  • Looking forward to the week of April 6 to April 12, we have LEGO The Hobbit and Kinect Sports Rivals. Though I don't expect either of them to immediately kick out Wind Waker HD, both may eventually do so.

Notes:

  • This week, Titanfall went up a couple of places worldwide, reaching the #9 overall spot, while Infamous: Second Son overtook Knack. In America, Titanfall overtook Madden NFL 25 for the #7 spot. In Europe, there were no Top 10 Changes in position.
  • 19 games now have a million or more sales, with Dead Rising 3 now added to the list.
  • Ground Zeros looks like it may overtake Wind Waker in a few weeks, but Zelda is putting up a fight. Depending on how long it takes, a game like Watch Dogs, Mario Kart 8 or Wolfenstein, the three biggest 8th gen console games of May, might overtake them for the #20 spot first.
  • Neither Kinect Sports Rivals or LEGO The Hobbit sold even 100,000 across gen 8 consoles their first week, making them unlikely to end up in the Top 20.
  • It's worth noting that Europe is a bit of a dull region. Nearly 1.8 million copies of FIFA, but only about 0.4 million copies of the #10 game. That means the #10 game is only 22% as sucessful as the #1 game. Compare that to America, where the percentage is a more respectable 36%, or worldwide, which is 37%.
  • In fact, even though Japan is technically a weeker region for Gen 8 consoles, Europe is in many ways the least 8th-gen-region so far. One has to go down to the #5 spot to find a game not available on platforms made last decade, and even big new names of 2014 so far like Titanfall and Second Son are doing worse in Europe than in America.
  • IIn any case, there is still a shortage of big Gen 8 exclusives. This will be improved with time, but it's interesting that third parties, despite in some cases demanding a new generation, have mostly not taken advantage of it.
