Notes for March 15, 2014

  • Ghosts has almost caught up with NSMBU, thanks to its being the #1 game on two consoles and appearing on the third.
  • There are now 15 million-seller games for Gen 8 consoles. Of these, five are Wii U exclusive, two are PS4 exclusive, one is One exclusive, and seven are on multiple Gen 8 consoles.
  • Titanfall should easily be the 16th million seller, appearing at the #18 spot its first week, ahead of Wind Waker HD and Ryse. However, it is competing with a few other shooters, like Ghosts, BF4, and Shadow Fall ahead of it, which might potentially hurt its short-term sales.
  • With Titanfall, EA has a quarter of the top 5 spots, even while ignoring the Wii U. This suggests that both EA is a publisher of hit games and that the Wii U is the least relevant of the three consoles.
  • Currently, out of these top 20 games, 11.95 million PS4 games have been sold, as well as 9.85 million Xone games and 12.54 Wii U games. PS4 owners are the least likely to buy exclusives based on this data. Furthermore, in all likelihood, the release of Infamous: Second Son will let the PS4 overtake the Wii U by the end of the month, especially since the exclusive Wind Waker HD is in a perilous position, and may soon be overtaken by a game such as Ryse as well as Infamous.
  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, is not likely to ever enter this list. It'll have legs, but it's currently at only half the bottom games' sales. However, Wii U owners need not fret. The only Wii U exclusive in short-term risk of falling out of the top 20 is Wind Waker HD, and Mario Kart 8, an easy multi-milion seller is on the way.

Still a great list and thread! I hope you keep this one up for the entirety of the gen

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

In my mind, there are three likely possibilities. In order from most to least likely:

1) I mantain this thread at least through the end of 2014. At this point, some PS4 exclusives take up most of the list, and render this thread less valuable, causing me to end it.

2) I mantain this thread for years to come. It would probably become a VGChartz staple, ala the daily COMG thread. I would expand the thread beyond the Top 20, and maybe through in some "qualifier"-based lists.

3) This site actually adds new features rendering this thread unnecessary, at which point I'll be too busy playing with the new toys to mind this thread's obsolesence.

Any way, expect plenty of updates for at least the rest of 2014.

Notes for March 22, 2014

  • Call of Duty: Ghosts is now the best-selling console game of Gen 8... thanks in part to its Wii U sales, without which it would still be well over 100,000 sales behind New Super Mario Bros U. Likewise, Battlefield 4 was overtaken Nintendo Land. The fact that both jumps happened the same week is probably symbolic of something.
  • Titanfall continues to climb up a few spots, overtaking Forza 5 as the lead XOne exclusive. At its current rate, it will become the #2 game on the XOne next week, and unless sales really plummet, can easily become the #1 XOne game by summer.
  • Infamous: Second Son has entered the Top 20, knocking Ryse out and Wind Waker HD down a notch. It should quickly overtake Knack as the #2 PS4 exclusive.
  • Outside of the Top 20, major games include the recently deposed Ryse, Pikmin 3, LEGO City Undercvoer, Metal Gear Sollid: Ground Zeroes, and Just Dance 2014. Of these, only Ground Zeroes has a solid (har har) shot at making the Top 20 eventually, being only about a quarter million sales behind Wind Waker HD.
  • We now have two 2014 games on this list, along with two 2012 games. The rest are from 2013. How many 2014 games will we get maximum?
