Forums - Sales - The PS4 is a MAJOR flop in Japan - we need to talk about it

Soriku said:

The title is a reference to a really old thread on here, but I wonder how many people realize it.

I'll respond seriously and say it's no surprise the PS4's not doing well yet:

1. Japan doesn't mind holding on to old systems for a while.

2. No really notable games (Yakuza sold mostly on PS3 and the mainline series is far more popular).

3. Notable games like Dark Souls 2, Tales of Zestiria, and Persona 5 are still coming to PS3.

If there are any supply issues, that's detrimental as well. Supply discussions are always controversial and it's hard to get an accurate picture with people and sources saying different things so I'll just list this as a possiblity for now.

It'll start selling well when bigger games start coming. It likely won't be this year though. Gonna be a long year for people who care so much.

It is the shortage Rol.
It is, however, a major flop in Brazil, if you want to discuss that...

@ethomaz would disagree...

I wouldn't go as far as calling it a flop. It's a decent performance especially with the lack of any heavy-hitters at this time in the console's life. That said, I'm not sure about it selling out in Japan as some have mentioned.

You can pretty much walk into any major electronic store and buy the console right away. Amazon Japan even has some First Limited Pack consoles in stock and ready to ship (the prices have gone up a notch, though).

I blame word of mouth.

Japanese gamer's realized how terrible knack is

Maybe there is hope down the road. After all, even UENO Juri is appearing in a drama this year after a few years hiatus ;)

I found the correlation between Pikmin 3 launch and the huge Wii U spike in sales:

People saying supply issues will be the same to say that when it hits 15k. Some people can't face the reality of a market changing.

it's not a market changing (not entirely). it's more like people don't buying expensive hardware for games they don't want.

9.8 / 8

ps3 total sales divided by the years.

Do the math it isn't pretty. 3ds outsold the ps3 lifetime in 2 years.  If that isn't a market change than nothing will prove it.

How is ps4 close to failing in Japan lol.. Xbox 360 failed in Japan... Wait till their stock stabalizes..

I think it's better to wait at least a few months before we make any conclusions about this. To me it could just as well be supply issues, or that the games currently out for the PS4 doesn't really attract the Japanese audience.

In a year it would be interesting to see how well the PS4 has really done. And to see a year-on-year comparison between it and Wii, PS3 and Wii U.

Awesome!!! The PlayStation Brand and oll the PlayStation Fanboys with their Virtual Penis Fights has to STOP because I can't handle them anymore!!! And esspecially the anoying Call of Duty and Battlefield kiddys gives me the rest on the PlayStation platform!!!

admit it, ps4 sell that badly in japan cause there are no game that Japanese want. That's the reason Sony delay its launch date in Japan. We have to wait till FFXV release date to fully answer the question: "PS4 is a flop or not" :)

I don't think anyone can deny that PS4 lacks games...  But is that hurting it anywhere else?  We have a crappy selection over here too and people are still buying it.

As far as Final Fantasy goes, it's big, but I don't think it will turn the system around by itself.  Sony has been shrinking its support for Japan since PS3.  I think MGS and FF are the two big names they have left for Japan.

Japan realizes that if they want games for them, they aren't gonna find it on a home console.  All Japanese developers ever talk about these days is how they want to wesernize their games because Japan isn't big enough to support them anymore.

To those saying it is a stock issue:

No.

You, and your facts in that link.

I wonder if it has something to do with the fact, outside of a few exclusives, you can do everything else on a PS3, like blu-ray, 3rd party games, etc.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

There's no good games for the Japanese yet. That's why the launch wasn't great. Wait until the new Final Fantasy comes out, if ever.
