No, they need the WiiU to be at least vaguely profitable to help fund the next console they launch. I don't agree with much of what Iwata says, but he was correct when he said that Nintendo needed deep pockets or they won't survive even one console failure. There's no need to blow the deep pockets they have now on the WiiU, best to just ride it out as close to being profitable as possible and try again with a console that might resonate with the public more in a few years time.

Ya they would be losing more on hardware but in theory a price cut will increase sales which in turn means more people buying games/accessories which can potentially offset losses.

I don't think they have a choice.

We know sales won't increase until Mario Kart 8 in May, but leaving the console at $299 with its current included games is suicide since consumers would still have to purchase MK on top of that.

So I think at the very least they'll bundle MK8 for $299, which would lose them less money than a price drop, but as I've said before that's a bit of a jab compared to a one-two combo and waiting until the holidays to drop the price won't create that extra allurement that the system needs for Kart.

Therefore, I think the best thing to do would be to take the hit and just do the MK8 bundle for $249 in May. Yes, they'll lose money in the short term, but not selling as many consoles at this point is also not getting your games out to as many people. At least with the release/bundling of MK coinciding with a drop to $249 it would have a tremendous effect on sales, on garnering some interest for the console, and it'll make all the stuff they show at E3 even better knowing that things are going to be smoother here on out.

Sometimes manufacturing more would cost less. In other words, sometimes the boost from a 50 dollar cut would make cost of production go down. Then you make up the rest of the loss by SW and accessory sales = more profitable

It seems u took our conversation to heart

But ya a $50 price cut in May to coincide with Mario Kart 8 and a bundle would be ideal. If possible a redesign that cuts manufacturing costs down a bit and a smaller Gamepad would be great.

Awkward time for a price cut. Especially when MK8 figures already. Got to do it to sustain momentum. End of the quarter to prevent losses appearing for the quarter or begining of the 4th quarter when holiday sales would mask losses would be the best bet for a price cut. So June (announced during e3?) or Sept/Oct

Price cuts have happened in May before. PS1 had a price cut in May 1996, PS2/GC/Xbox were all cut in May 2002, PS2/Xbox again In May 2003 and PS2 once again In May 2004. Wii had a price cut in May 2011.

This thread has nothing to do with that lol.

Ps1, Ps2, and Wii were probably passing savings on to the consumer for most of those. And GC was selling at a profit from the start. For a loss leading console like Wii U (since the first ones being sold at the new price would be the biggest losses) it would make sense, for fiscal resons, to have it in the three months i listed

I actually had no idea that many price reductions happened in May.  Makes me even more hopeful.

I agree with this, however I think Nintendo is too stuborn to do it!

Yup. They will cut the price in August, after the Mario Kart 8 boost fizzles out.

I don't think there is another traditional Nintendo console coming anyway ... the next "system" will be all mobile parts, the "console" will just be the mobile chip without the LCD screen (like PS Vita). Nintendo is not going to bother spending money on a full blown console again when the audience for it is only 15-20 million unless they have a monstrous new gimmick they are sure will work (which is extremely difficult to come up with).

Doubt it. You know what else probably won't get a cut this year? These threads.
