Ot. I'll never understand mario and why it sells the way it does.

Perhaps another thing that wasn't accounted for when thinking about Mario Kart 8's sales was just how good the game would be. This isn't just standard Mario Kart levels of good, for me it's the best in the series. Even to the people who do disagree with that, most people would seem to rate it among their top 2 or 3. Word of mouth can help - Splatoon has shown that too. And then of course there's the DLC releases, keeping the game new and fresh, putting it back in the media, and also spreading very positive word of mouth for being excellent DLC.
