Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is Sony responsible for the PS4's great sales, or are Nintendo/Microsoft?

The funny thing is honestly, Sony probably has the weakest library overall of the three new consoles, they've just out-executed Microsoft on the hardware front, and Nintendo literally has done nothing right with their console so that hasn't been a problem for Sony to deal with.

I think its Nintendo and MS made the ps4 a success... Basically what e3 2013 was a "Do Not fuck up" e3... And what I mean by that is, Microsoft basically went to e3 and said, we fucked up, Sony went there and didn't do anything impressive and Nintendo was a no show so between the 3, the company that fucked up the least was Sony and therefore basically won 2014...

Microsoft and Nintendo's mistakes factor far more into the success of the PS4 than anything Sony did. Particularly Microsoft's mistakes.

Would you say the same if Sony's mistakes factored more into the xbox 360's success rather than it's merits ?

Sony's mistakes with the PS3 did largely factor into the success of the 360. Microsoft did alot of things right, but if Sony had made similarly good decisions with the PS3 the 360 wouldn't have done as well as it did. Sony had the advantage of a huge fanbase from the previous generation and they lost a large chunk of it to Nintendo and Microsoft because of their mistakes.

Let's face it, if the Xbox One was $350-$380 with it's current specs and without a bundled Kinect, Microsoft would be doing alot better right now. Sony would still be in the lead, because they have released in more countries and because they have a stronger position in much of Europe and Japan, but Microsoft wouldn't have lost the US and UK and they'd be nipping at Sony's heels with at least 4.5 million in sales (plus decent Kinect sales on the side).

@350, Microsoft might have just been leading to this point, especially considering the games that released with each.

Also, without the bundled Kinect, MS more than likely would have released in more countries.

This will be a pretty easy generation for Sony, the main thing they have to worry about is MS panicking and starting to money hat certain IP, but even there, I think developers will be extremely reluctant if the PS4 is the no.1 console userbase wise (which should happen like this week).

The avoidance of failure is a success in itself, and one Sony deserves credit for.

Sony is responsible for its success

The way I see it Nintendo does not compete directly with Sony and Microsoft.

Microsoft and Sony compete to make the gamer who cares mainly about multiplats get it in their console and not the other one. Sony won because it is clear that the next Call of Duties and GTAs will be better on Playstation, for USD100 less.

The way I see it the market has not grown much since 2 gens ago. Sony sold almost 160 million PS2, and last gen both Sony and Microsoft sold 80 million each.

Its more to do with MS and Nintendo's mistakes. Sony did exactly as it always done: release a more powerful console. Nothing was significantly different. Sony just got lucky that MS/ Nintendo messed up.

True, but company A benefits greatly when company B drops the ball.

The 360 couldn't have been a massive success unless Sony dropped the ball with PS3.

I assume you mean MS/Nintendo there.

Nintendo always screws up against a Sony console anyway it's like clockwork, they'll do something stupid like going cartridge only or making their console purple and then making Zelda into a cartoon, which makes everything very easy for Sony aside from the one-time miracle of the Wiimote which genuinely caught Sony off guard.

MS' faith in Kinect and not paying attention to their specs was the wrong move this gen.

Oops, I'll fix that.

Yeah MS got overconfident especially with their pricing.
