Well I beat all the main Final Fantasy installments as well as some of the spin offs like Final Fantasy Legend and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Echoes of Time or Final Fantasy Tactics.

I also beat Wild Arms! The entire Star Ocean series, Tales of Phantasia, Tales of Graces, Tales of the Abyss and Tales of Symphonia!

Add to that Super Mario RPG, YS 1,2 and 3. Shadow Hearts and Shadow Hearts from the New World!

Dragon Quest 1,2,3 and 5! I also beat Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross!

Shin Megami Tensei 1, Nocturne, 4 and the entire Persona series. Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2 too!

Terranigma and Mother 1,2 and 3. Parasite Eve 1 and 2...

I think I'm getting tired of listing them all but I can say with certainty that I played lots of RPG's and I like Pokemon quite a lot! Not the best but it's certainly good.

As for the platforms where I played them I would say it's about 50/50 in regards to Sony and Nintendo platforms.

Heh, I think I'm the guy that KupoMogli was thinking about when he made this thread.

These are the JRPGs that I have completed:

  • Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (GBA)
  • Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time (DS)
  • Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story (DS)
  • Paper Mario (N64)
  • Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (GCN)
  • XenoBlade Chronicles (Wii)

Meanwhile, here are the Pokemon RPG games I have completed:

  • Pokemon Red (GB)
  • Pokemon Yellow (GB)
  • Pokemon Silver (GBC)
  • Pokemon Sapphire (GBA)
  • Pokemon Diamond (DS)
  • Pokemon Platinum (DS)
  • Pokemon Black (DS)
  • Pokemon Black 2 (DS)
  • Pokemon Y (3DS)

Yes, they've all been developed internally by Nintendo so yes, they're all on Nintendo systems. To be honest, the standard JRPG package has never been enticing to me. Even the most "JRPG" game on that list, XenoBlade Chronicles, was appealing and fun to me because of its more WRPG/Action Adventure elements of exploration and real time battle system. In fact, the game was great for me in spite of my annoyances with the over convoluted plot and characters that adhered to JRPG stereotypes. Story and characterization (major focuses of JRPGs) can be great elements in gaming, no doubt, but they've never been a selling point for me.



And this is the point I wanted to make. There are hundreds of JRPGs released just in the west, more exclusively to Japan.

If you're on a gaming forum you might be more into gaming than "most" other gamers. So think about it. If you've barely played any amount of RPGs other than a few series, you'd only expect the average gamer to play less.

Also, looking at the lists posted, very few lists, guess most people didn't want to reply to this thread, other than 007BondAgents short list of some good games, with a bit of variety, most are Nintendo developed RPGs, and if not Nintendo developed, then on Nintendo consoles. Few aren't Nintenido developed, and fewer aren't on Nintendo consoles. Nintendo fans have even said it themselves that they assume Nintendo makes the best games so that's why they don't buy third party. But how can so many Nintendo fans who haven't played more RPGs, state that so and so isn't better than Pokemon, when Pokemon or other Nintendo RPGs are just about all they've played. Your opinion is the inherent Nintendo bias you carry around, not because you've played any of the games being argued as worse.

Pokemon has high sales because it's like every other Nintendo franchise. Nintendo is a family friendly console developer, always has been, and parents parents know of Mario, they know of Pokemon since their kids get sucked into watching the TV show which as I've pointed out before is one of the most watched shows on all of Hulu despite their being better animes(Pokemon isn't a terrible anime though.).

Hard not to be in your top five franchises when you've only played a minimum of two games from six franchises. 

If you want to talk about owned RPG franchises btw, Sony while they may not develop them themselves, they do fund and sometimes even co develop the games.  It's no different than Nintendo purchasing Monolithsoft or Camelot to be a first party developer. 

Legend of Legaia, Wild ARMs, White Knight Chronicles, Legend of Dragoon, Dark Cloud, Rogue Galaxy, Jeanne D' Arc, Arc the Lad, and Demon's Souls are all Sony owned.  Last gen Sony Japan studios co developed White Knight Chronicles and Demon's Souls, so it's not like they had no input.  

They also own Beyond the Beyond which would be a decent game if Camelot, yes, that Camelot, didn't add the most stupid design desicision imaginable, pressing buttons at the correct time during an attack to do more or less damage.  But not how it was on Super Mario RPG.  That would have actually been better.

Well.  Maybe I should have clarified.  What Pokemon fans that think Pokemon is one of the best RPGs.  On your top 50 you listed a lot of what you have here.  No Pokemon listed though.  So I'm taking your opinion as it's worse than most of the games you've listed.

I don't see the point to this thread. What are you getting at? Anyhow, here's my list;

- Paper Mario (TTYD, SPM, SS)
- Final Fantasy XIII/2
- Kingdom Hearts I/II/and one of the DS ones that I can't remember
- Dragon Quest

That's it, there may be a few that I've forgotten. Feel free to criticize it.

Actually I will criticize it.  You played Final Fantasy 13 and 13-2 but none of the others.  This is a case where I'd say no wonder you think Pokemon is the best RPG ever.  Anyone would if FF13 was one of their only RPG experiences.

Pokemon is definitely in my top 5 series though, however I wouldnt consider it the best RPG series by any stretch. What makes it good is that anyone can get into it, from casual to hardcore, it doesnt have the best mechanics nor storytelling, but it has a ton of replayability

You're just assuming that I, as a Pokemon Fan, think that Pokemon is one of the best RPGs out there. Who says I think that? Who says I think XIII/2 are bad games? I don't.
