Those 5 Million Wii U's are Nintendo Fans. Without them, it would be nothing. Nothing at all.

The extra 700k + are people who thought it was a new Wii controller.

Only thing wrong with the Wii U right now is the OS is not user friendly. No party chat, cross game chat, eshop is only good for NA and Canada,  join game feature, friend list and miiverse is separated for some weird reason, no notifications when friends are online (all you see is a blinking blue LED) and they have not shown the gamepad's full potential. As far as games we all know the games will come and they will be enjoyable as always.

To be fair the Vita was only made fun of because everyone was calling it the 3DS killer post launch. It only became a laughing stock about a month after it launched and everyone realized it bombed. I remember seeing countless comments stating the Sony NGP = Nintendo Got Pwned.
