What is the definition of Art? And then we will talk
Some people think that a gorilla with a paint brush is art. Some people don't like Picasso. To each their own. Art is very subjective. Depends on your tastes. They're both right.

That being said, if you consider videogames art, you just can't say "art games are the artsy ones", like Flower. No, if videogames are art, then a game like Call of Duty must be considered as well. |
This is true. Once you accept that a subject is a form of art, you must accept all of it as art. Film is art. Sure, there are some that are more artisitic (I would say Gravity is a form of film artistic content, the most recent example.) and some that aren't, like Transformers. Too bad so sad, Transformers is also art, just not as focused on that aspect.
My response would be this...
Motion pictures are considered an art form, right? Including the ones that are completely done with CGI workstation computers, correct? So what's the difference between, say, Toy Story the movies and Toy Story the videogames?

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.
If we can pretend art is a real degree, why can't we pretend games are an art?
If games aren't or can't be art then I have no idea what art is.

Your girlfriends Art Teacher has no idea what they're talking about.
There are lots of people being pretty disparaging of being an art teacher in here. How many artists, even the biggest names, were lucky enough to make a living purely from selling there work? Very very few (and they're mostly the crap ones - it's easier to sell safe art after all). It's incredibly common for artists to be art teachers/lecturers to make ends meet.
For the topic at hand - there are debates about whether literature, film, illustration and music can be considered art (as opposed to only having artistic merit). It's not surprising that video games suffer from the same problem (particularly as, let's be fair here, the vast vast majority of games are going to measure up pretty badly if judged as a piece of art, as opposed to a form of entertainment).
Personally I'm not sure where I stand - it's not really an easy question to even quantify. More importantly - I'm not sure that it matters either way.
My friend is an actual artist (sells his paintings for $50K+ to hedge fund managers and such), not some lame art teacher, and he says video games absolutely are art.
So you can tell your GF to tell her art teacher he's clueless when it comes to understanding what defines art.

This is the best comment in the entire thread, art or not it doesn't really matter.
