Forums - Gaming - Will Microsoft Leave The Video Game Market If PS4 Takes Most of the Marketshare?

This is why I have always been against any singular console taking majority stake of the console market, it is bad for everyone, reduces competition which then in turn stagnates innovation and potentially increases prices.

Thats why PS2 gen was much cheaper then the next one, it was great for everyone 3rd party devs were not going bankrupt left and right.  Competition was good as they did all they could to stay relevent in the face of utter dommination.  And it also had the most diverse game library of any gen while the last one was some waggle bunch of shovelware and shooters.

last time we saw a domination, sega went out of hardware business. nintendo change to a weak hardware, and sony made a console hard to develop and expensive as hell, and tougth it would sell like ps2.

domination is bad.

The only reason it's dominating is because of the price differance. It x1 was the same price it would beat sony in the US, not world wide but in the us for sure. And that alone would keep the x1 competitive.

The thing is, though, the US was MS's only stronghold. Even when the PS3 was way expensive, it dominated the 360 everywhere else except the US. Now that Sony has the price advantage, the PS4 is absolutely DESTROYING the XBone around the world, and making the XBone look silly in its best territory.

If the XBone was the same price, yea, it may beat the PS4 in the US, but the rest of the world would still dominate. Remember that the PS3 had to play catch up, and worldwide domination outside the US helped that. Now the PS4 and XBone have released at the same time. Take the rate at which the PS3 was selling during the course of its lifetime so far, but with aligned launched. The PS3 would be way ahead of the 360, instead of being a statistical tie.

After the strides the PS3 made, even if the PS4 was more expensive, it would still dominate and there wouldn't be any excuses ("well, if you align the launches...") because we'd see the results first hand instead of making inferences and extrapolations.

I don't know about you but the console business isn't exactly a monopoly yet ...

The position is only a temporary thing and in each generation it always resets.

They'd sell it to another company and run the infrastructure as well as publish a few games.

Then put Halo out on PS4.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

Microsoft is a business.
Microsoft is a business with shareholders.

Shareholders don't care what consumers want or think, they want ever-increasing profits.

If the Xbox One proves to be unprofitable, there is indeed a high probability it would get closed down/sold/spun off in order to appease the shareholders.
The same goes for Sony and Nintendo too.

Smart post.

why? if price was the only factor, than the wiiu would be handing both their asses. the ps4 took back its crown that the ps2 had when it crushed the original xbox into the cement(in usa). if it was the same price,i think ps4 would sell more for a few reasons, its more powerful(that does help a bit,and why the original xbox even sold as much as it did to help create games like halo),and another reason is that it captured the cool factor,it just did,its the new cool thing to get(like the wii and ps1/2 were),its the hot popular item that everybody wants for dif reasons.

no, I just think they will release their next console sooner and try and make it more powerful than the HW they think sony will be developing.

regardless of what happens, MS should leave the gaming market just for the sake of rare's IP's being bought by a company that gets the job done.

It entirely depends on the profitability of the division, and how it impacts their future plans. The US is much more cutthroat when it comes to corporate losses/shareholder profits going down YoY. If the division can regain profitability, they may not care whether they're number 1 or 2.
