LOL. True. Kids now though want smartphones more than anything.
But 200 mil+ for the PS4 that this time doesn't have a must have media feature? All consoles have their share of casuals, not just the Wii. I just don't think that there are that many hardcore gamers out there, even with population growth. To me the PS4 and the Vita share striking similarities. Once the hardcore crowds sales are done, I think sales will tail off. Just my opinion. Your guess is as good as mine.

Very bold prediction. over 200,000,000 for PS4, Highly doubt that. MS will make many moves to stop that from happening.

You think Wii U will sell 5 mil next year? Shouldn't this year be its peak?

Wii U gets its successor announced and released in 2016. PS5 comes out in 2020. PS4.1 comes out holiday 2016 and PS4.2 comes out holiday 2018. Other stuff happens with PS4 too. XBONE does not have a direct successor, but rather a home media device released in 2018 using the XBOX brand. The new device can play XBONE games however and cuts the system's life short. Amazon releases their console in 2015 and it flops. They release a second console in 2019 to beat the PS5 to market. Their second system finds moderate success. Steam machines aren't a flop, but they stay incredibly niche having a very small impact on the console market until late in the gen. Samsung and Google also release consoles in 2016 to compete with Amazon but both machines find little success. They are micro consoles like ouya and sell more than Amazon's traditional console, but they make their companies less money. Neither get a successor. |
Nice one.. and yes.. people tend to forget that this gen will not be like anything ever and alot of players are entering the market
Samsung "gaming service" will be part of most of samsungs tv..you can't escape.. :) (and i'm not sure samsung will do this alone.. mayby they join up with big players in industry)
Apple will enter the tv market (and that includes gaming) 100% in few years
AND Nintendo could drop a new console holiday 2014.. A wii-u whit more power.. so itcan run normal wii-u.. and has a "Steam machines channel" or other... extra
(talking nintendo we also has to consider that VR are just around the corner.. and that huge impact it will have..)

I think it's a bit early for a peak. We have big games coming this year but we have no clue what 2015 will bring. AC, KI, Starfox, LM, Pokemon, Zelda, and new ip could all be coming.
Hmm...
The grand total will be less than Gen 7, but roughly on par with Gen 6, including the Dreamcast.
My guess is that the PS4 and One will do well into 2015, but none of the consoles will do as well in their mid-to-late lives as previous PlayStations and Xbox's. consoles have.
If I honestly had to guess the breakdown in Millions:
| Year | PS4 | One | Wii U |
| 2012 | N/A | N/A | 2 |
| 2013 | 4 | 3 | 3 |
| 2014 | 17 | 13 | 5 |
| 2015 | 21 | 18 | 6 |
| 2016 | 18 | 11 | 5 |
| 2017 | 16 | 8 | 5 |
| 2018 | 12 | 5 | 3 |
| 2019 | 10 | 2 | 1 |
| Total before 2020 | 96 | 60 | 30 |
Wii U – 18 mil
PS4 - 130 mil
Xbox one - 40 mil
This gen won't be as long as the 7th gen.
These are my optimistic predictions. For the Wii U, my pessimistic prediction is 12 mil.
Wii u - I still think it can match GC and N64(those didn't have NSMBU and some casual games, plus Nintendo's franchises could have grown last gen):35 millions.
Xbox - 60 millions.
PS4 - 80 millions.
As in lifetime, which means as long as the consoles are sold, more or less, I disagree with each comment that I have read so far.
If we look at the last generation each console could and should land on 90-110 million consoles sold each, about 100 million consoles average for each system, when the generation is de-facto over. And even if we would say that the generation is over now, or even last year, it would still be 80+80+100, 260 million consoles. Far more than anyone I have seen predicted back then.
When people predicted that generation it looked very much like your predictions now. Below 50 for one, above 50 for the other and around 100 or more for the last one. But everyone predicted, more or less 100 million consoles less sold.
So, when you guys now are predicting the same thing again, that this generation will sell 100+ millions less than the last one actually did, what are you basing this on?
Close to 300 million consoles has already been sold for the last generation, and everyone predicted less than 200. And now it's the same story all over again.
I will predict 150 million PS4, 100 million X1 and 50 million Wii U. Even if I am wrong with the actual consoles I feel very confident that around 300 million consoles will be sold in total.
The only thing pointing to a lower total sales for consoles are rumors, the same rumors we hear each generation and it always turns out to be wrong.
