More bad, disappointing and controversial games (new Dante anyone?) compared to 2012 and people getting bored of last gen. Tomb Raider sold well though it just didn't make a profit because of Square's ridiculous management.

2009-2011 = The wii/casual effect?
Wow Xbox was down considerably since 2011. PS3 improved over 2012 but was worse than 2011 too, it can thank GTAV for not falling worse than it did.
What's worse is that there were a ton of big games in 2013 but in 2012 there wasn't really anything worthwhile until the end of the year it was a terrible year and it's not that much less than 2013.
Oh I forgot, Beyond also didn't do very well.

Yep, the Wii created a market. Maybe it was a fad after all.

Yeah, but digital sales has been growing. Tons of great sales over the year.
Minecraft sold like 10 million units. State of Decay apparently did over a million. MS tends to bundle their games as digital downloads. Hence, digital downloads are growing in popularity and eating into physical sales.

These two are easy and I don't think it's popular opinion, or atleast originally popular opinion. These games plus Lords of Shadow Mirror of Fate, Shinobi 3DS, White Knight Chronicles 2, etc, received universal slander. Just as people purchase games because they're drawn into the hype, something like emo Dante, Dead Space 3 being a shooting game, like Dead Space 2 wasn't(it was,) Lords of Shadow isn't a good game because it's trying to be different from Castlevania, etc, and it spreads that so and so game is either shitty or it's going to be shitty because such and such, so everyone boards the hate train, and then they stop to let more people aboard every so often.
A lot of games sell because people are sheep. Same reason a lot of games don't sell. Same reason why certain music is extremely popular and some lesser known bands are actually better. Same reason that etc, etc, etc. People follow the crowd and form their own opinions partially based on what other people say is good less so than they form their own opinions despite what everyone else thinks. That's my opinion on it anyways.

Dead Space 3 didnt sell cause they changed the game to appeal to more people, and in doing so lost its appeal to its fanbase. not to mention macro transactions. I know thats why i didn't buy it. I may if i see it on sale on steam
As pointed by an earlier poster, we've had a falling market for a few years, even taking digital into account. Old console gen is tired and cannot produce similar sales as in the past. It is down to next gen to revise the decline -which is absolutely vital: we need much higher sales per title to offset the skyrocketing dev costs.
Well most of those games besides Bioshock and Tomb Raider (which sold pretty well, not including the rise of digital) were average or not good compared to other installments in the franchise.
