Forums - Sales - Ps4 outsold Wii U 3.5 times this week. Is it time to panic?

I wonder just what anyone thinks Nintendo should "try" that is so fucking CRAZY that it's magically going to spur millions of sales week-in-week-out? I also question just what kind of grasp do most people actually have when it comes to game development or the games industry? Because an awful lot of folks seem to think that there should magically be some quick-fix answers for the Wii U, that could magically turn everything around in a matter of weeks or something. That just isn't the case, and it never would be.

For one thing, Wii U sales aren't GOOD, but they're not nearly as "END OF THE WORLD" as some people have been trying to act. For another, PS4 was a super-hyped (overhyped?) console that JUST came out a couple of months ago. Of course it's sales are still going to be higher than that of a system that came out over a year ago. ALL of the consoles' sales dropped drastically after Xmas. That happens every year. Wii U sales will pick back up when MK8 comes out, especially when Nintendo eventually does an MK8 bundle. I'm not sure what kind of sales impact DKCR2 will have, but it will likely provide at least a bump in sales for a couple of weeks, as I'm sure there are, perhaps, people that have been waiting for that game to get a Wii U.

But I know for a fact that a lot more gamers have been waiting for either MK or SB to release before buying one, so those games will be the true litmus test, as far as sales and sales boosts go.

In the meantime, there is literally nothing (that counts as a sound business decision) that Nintendo could do to magically make sales explode right now. It is what it is, and will only be fixed over time with the release of more and more GAMES that people want to play, and there are GAMES people want to play, then they will be more likely to break down and buy the console to play them.

3DS has outsold PS Vita for multiple years at 6:1 world wide...

If it is time for Nintendo to panic on the Wii U at 3.5:1, then it must be time for Sony to fold the tents, coward home, and leave the handheld business with Vita.

PS4? Forget PS4, Nintendo needs to work hard just to get the Wii U to sell at GameCube levels.

I also have the feeling those VGChartz Wii U numbers for the US market are overtracked.

What would bring you to that conclusion? They were substantially undertracked last time compared to NPD.

Nintendo projected 2.8 million for this fiscal year not to long ago, witch is till the end of March. VGChartz already has the Wii-U at 2.8 million from March last year, with about 10 weeks of sales to go. Sure Wii-U will have smaller stock now, but even at Wii-U sales levels we are talking 400k-500k.

Nintendo reported 5.86M WiiU shipped by Jan 1st 2014

Exactly. Not too mention that it's quite obvious that Nintendo estimated lower than what they most likely will sell in order to have a positive spin for their fiscal year end report. (Shipments at this rate should be close to 6.5 - 7 mill), which would put them ahead of the 2.8 mill projection.

Thank you

The last bit of your post is a tad overstated for effect but I don't see how it's an unfair comparison.  You are correct that the beating Vita is taking to the 3DS is definitely something that Sony should be looking at as an indication that what they are trying now isn't working and they shouldn't just soldier on with the same strategy, and yes something crazy might be a good idea (like Vita TV seems like a crazy idea which obviously hasn't worked but shows they know the status quo isn't working).  Nintendo probably should look at WiiU in not quite as bad a light since the comparison between WiiU and PS4 isn't as bad as Vita to 3DS, but they shouldn't be going home satisfied of a job well done at least as far as marketing, sales, and mindshare goes.

...

At the moment, I'd be ok being outsold 3.5:1. The PS4 is much newer, and it's by far the clear favorite in this generation (it's outselling the X-Box One by more than 2:1 at this point as well, and the One was released at the same time frame).

I'd simply advocate Nintendo sticking to their plan for the time being, although something absolutely needs to be done about the third party support if this is the fastest they can churn first party titles out.

mmm no?
actually thats a good ratio for WiiU.
Means is gonna end around 30M

PS4 should outsell  WiiU by 4x or 5x every week and it would be normal

Between 3-4X for PS4 vs Wii U seems more plausible than 4-5. Sales should also fall closely to 1.5X (in favour of PS4) to almost even during the release of MK8 and for a few months following after that. Holidays however will put the sales gap back up to 3-3.5X, unless Nintendo pulls something magical out of their ass (Zelda U, Mario Galaxy 3)

Smash

Your right, they could release it during the holiday season, however, I believe it may end up prior to that which is why I didn't include it (I'm thinking end of August).

Nintendo gets a bigger boost than the other 2 companies during the holiday season, parents who may wait months until xmas to give their kid the console.

This year it looks like we will have Mario Kart in May, X and Bayonetta 2 in the middle, and Smash Bros before a few weeks before Holiday season. Mario 3D World was released in November 22 and had their best selling weeks in December if I recall correctly.

Well, I'm pretending an imaginary scenario that happens where Zelda U gets released for the holidays, therefore causing Smash to be released for end of August.

On a more realistic note, if they do release Smash in November, I hope its earlier than SMW3D was, in order to better penetrate holiday sales (Nov 7-14 would be ideal)

Nintendo is already in panic mode.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

There is nothing wrong with understanding that you are not the market leader in the handheld department. Knowing this, gamers know that if you dont buy a Nintendo handheld, your only other choice is a Sony handheld, so having the 70/30 split is a win for Sony.

Sony is doing something beter than Nintendo in the Digital space though. PSN Vita games are selling better than their retail counterparts and with various new Games and DLC being released on nearly a bi-weekly release window, thats also a win for Sony.

The Vita is in a good place, not the best but in second place none the less.

Not panick, but they surely know something must be done.
