I'm calling it now.
Zelda U will release (like Twilight Princess) for two Nintendo platforms ... for Wii U and also a new Nintendo portable that's capable of handling ports from the Wii U at a reduced resolution (540p for example).
So you'll be able to play it at home or on the road. Both the next Nintendo portable and Zelda U will launch in the second half of 2015.
EAD will take lessons learned from Zelda: ALBW's development (specifically pacing/non-linear design) and incorporate that into Zelda U, much like Mario 3D World combines elements from 2D Mario and 3D/Galaxy games into a 3D Mario game.
This will also let Nintendo gain at least an extra 1-2 million WW sales for the game which will help recoup development costs and maximize profit potential. Other (by 2015) older Wii U games will also be ported IMO like DKC: TF for portable play.
I believe the next Mario from EAD Tokyo (Mario Galaxy 3?) could also follow the same release pattern ... for both Nintendo Next Gen Portable + Wii U release.

Stop trying to make a "next gen portable console" happen. It's not going to happen.

It's not only happening, it likely already exists in Nintendo's R&D labs.
The 3DS is supposed to be their last handheld? C'mon, lol.

What you're talking about isn't the 3DS's successor. What you're talking about is the Wii U tablet being sold as it's own system with the ability to play Wii U and 3DS games without being tethered to the Wii U. That's not happening and that's not what Nintendo were talking about. Especially not in 2015.
I don't doubt that the next Nintendo handheld will be a "fusion" device. I don't doubt that it will start Nintendo's iOS/Android business model. I don't doubt that it will be powerful enough to play downgraded Wii U and Wii U successor games over the same Nintendo Network operating system without the need for porting. But it will have two screens and it will still largely be a dedicated handheld only device.
But this isn't like Twilight Princess. Not going to happen.

I don't think either the 3DS or Wii U will have traditional successors. They are the end of the line just like Game Boy Advance was.
The next Nintendo hardware will be the start of a new line which will integrate the worlds of handheld/console together. They will likely both have fresh new branding entirely, which I think is smart. The "DS" and "Wii" brands taken on their own don't have the same catchet anymore. That's really not even my prediction. Iwata has said that himself, so I don't even see that as much of a debate.

No. You're misunderstanding what he was trying to say and leaving out other things he's said which paints a contradictory picture to what you're saying.
The Wii U won't have traditional successors. True.

But I wasn't arguing any of that. The 3DS successor will still have dual screens and the Wii U successor will still have a gamepad and Zelda Wii U will not be a launch title for either. It will still be a new line with a new branding not called the Wii or DS anymore. Those Nintendo Fusion rumors did get something right. The new branding will integrate each other rather than their predicessors. In other words, Fusion Terminal and Fusion DS are more likely names than Wii U2 and 4DS. You abandon dual screens and you abandon backwards compatibility with those systems, which completely contradicts the entire point of making a common OS. Those things are staying. Just the names/branding and the OS are changing. Not the hardware direction.
