It will be the same thing as the iPhone -- iPad.

The iPhone is actually the "lead" platform really, the iPad gets the same chip, just beefed up in cores/RAM occassionally so it can drive a higher resolution screen.

But keeping them mostly the same (same chipset more or less) allows iOS devs to port (or really "upscale" their games) easily and keep the experience the same more or less.

The consumer is free to choose on what device suits their lifestyle best to use those apps/games on ... that's what's going to happen with Nintendo "consoles" (though I don't think they will resemble consoles anymore).

This!

Yup, but don't expect much better than Wii U graphics. No handheld will be able to drive graphics beyond that level for a while, Wii U level fidelity (in a non-smoke and mirrors way) is really just going to come into focus probably around 2015.

When you really think about it the model today is borderline insane for the consumer, what Nintendo is basically asking of their fans is you have to buy 2 platforms every generation from Nintendo (handheld and console) to enjoy all of our games, and because we can't give you third party support you have to also buy a PS/XBox.

It's insane really, we're just used to it because there's been no alternative offered ... until now.

I think 2017 for Wii U Successor

For the handheld, I totally agree.

But for the home console, the limit is the cost of HW alone, there is no other limit anymore.

I think you need to let go of this concept, it's outdated thinking.

iPad-iPhone as a unified ecosystem would not work if the iPad was 20x more powerful than the iPhone. It would be the same dilenated system as well ... consoles/gaming handhelds have been from day 1.

Besides for Nintendo, I don't think there is any interest in graphics beyond what was shown in say that Zelda U trailer. A Zelda game with graphics of that quality likely is already pushing Nintendo into a budget area that is about the maximum they would ever want to spend on a single game.

It's about changing the user experience now and making products that fit a person's lifestyle. I think Nintendo is more than happy making games in that Wii U range of visual fidelity for the next 7-8 years ... they made games with GameCube level fidelity (more or less) for more than 10 years.

can't see that happening as Nintendo has never released a system before the previous one has been on the market for at least for 5 years

showing it in 2016 however is very likely

    R.I.P Mr Iwata :'(

This isn't iphone/ipad in the strictest sense. It's more in the sense of low-spec PC versus high-spec PC. I think you have it all wrong in that sense.

I don't see it. Like the iPad-iPhone hardware difference, the main difference in tech will be allowing one device to drive a higher resolution screen. But otherwise it will be the same chip. It will save Nintendo a fortune on R&D costs too.

The fact is really because this device would be unique in that it plays high end graphics on the road as well as doubling as a home console for those who still need that or need to use one in a pinch (ie: I don't need a home console but cousins are coming over, need to bust out some Mario Kart for a couple of hours on the TV) ... it doesn't need graphics any where beyond the Wii U.

And I think that just suits Nintendo just fine. The idea of a "transformer" game platform that goes from handheld to home console play as needed by the consumer's lifestyle would set this platform apart too.

Could happen. DS came out very early in the GBA's life too, right?

The GBA launched in NA on November 2001 and the DS launched on December 2004. So yeah the GBA had a pretty short life.

I think it's quite likely at this stage. It will incorporate elements of the Wii U so Wii U owners are still supported and not left out in the cold. I think hardware and software will be linked between home and handheld... I do think they will have ways to encourage owners to buy both, however.

Would not be surprised.

You called it.

Let's admit though, this level of integration is enormous. Any game made on one system playable on the other. It's going to be a big period of growth for Nintendo.

Between this and Playstation Now, it'll be a great time for gamers in general!
