Forums - Nintendo - Iwata further teases Quality of Life plans

This gen just started. Everyone should worry about this 3-4 years from now.

Stop the hating. It just means they will make products like say Wii Fit stand alone. Or Wii sports standalone. Or jogging acessories, etc.

Cmon... its not difficult to understand.

Nobody is hating, just clarification.

If it is as simple as you say then I think thats a fairly horrible plan to be honest.

No, its not. If you make a system that only needs to run simpler software, it can be sold for 100 euros/dollars or less. On the fitness business, that isnt much at all to pay. People spend hundreads on machines they never use. Its a completely different market. Different characteristics than the videogames market.

In Itawa I trust

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

I don't think the QoL stuff will initially be fitness based per se. That would pit Nintendo against the likes of Nike, and that defeats the whole purpose of a blue ocean.

It will likely be centered around senior citizens. Japan has a giant senior population that controls the majority of the wealth in the country ... no doubt Nintendo would love to get in on that. Probably something Miyamoto wants to do too since he at age 60 might be more interested in doing that than making another Star Fox or something. And we know Nintendo basically indulges his hobbies/interests.

I can actually see this being a tablet of some kind. QoL can mean mental health and lifestyle too. Whatever it is, it needs both hardware and software skills to make. I think they have an innovative software idea that needs something special to work.

Could it perhaps be an extension of the Wii mote... a physical motion game that doesn't need a Wii or TV to play?

Vitality sensor returns with QoL.

Can someone explain to me what the hell he is talking about. This couldn't be more vague if it tried.

Almost sounds like it is being made up as a stop gap to keep people off his back.

Ding! Ding! Ding!

Me thinks Iwata's just trying to buy for time until he can figure out what the hell he can do to fix the WiiU.

Wii U is done. Nintendo knows that even themselves, read between the lines.

They are looking to branch out into new profit streams (QoL) and will ride this storm out in the mean time.

His comments about future intergration of handheld/consoles basically confirms to me a future Nintendo game machine that is basically either a hybrid platform of sorts. I think Nintendo's already moved on to focus on this and the QoL thing as their new future dual pillars.

I dont think they will leave the Wii U at all. They have alot of development studios. More than enough to work on these pet projects. They are not gonna fire the rest of them, so its safe to assume they will continue to support the Wii U and the 3DS. Actually thats where the A&M strategy comes to.

Actually, this is a diversification strategy, that has nothing to do with the videogames market. They will be entering new markets where they have competitive stregths and they will remain on the console market aswell. This so they can maximise profits and reduce risks. This future Nintendo machine they are talking about, will not be a machine for hardcore gamers, or gamers at all. It will not be competing with the Wii U or the 3DS aswell.

These strategies Nintendo is using are pretty sensible and its an exciting time for the company to see all these doors open (from a management point of view). They are no longer just sitting on their old laurels, they are moving to make things happen.
