Forums - Sales Discussion - Wii U - 2013 vs 2014 sales comparison (VG Chartz) *updated Week 5

The only thing that happened is the new Mario game and more people aware of it being a different console and not a new controller for the Wii. I think it could sell 3 times this year what it sold last year, because of a higher baseline and Mario Kart and Smash Bros selling millions by itself.
The problem is the following years, all they would have remaining is Zelda, + the lesser franchises (if they decide to make those games) like Star Fox, Punch Out or F Zero.
Basically, the Wii U will run out of ammo this year.
To continue selling well after this year they would need something like a strong price cut.

edit: I thought it had sold only 2.800 million units like year, not over 3 million, in that case I don't think it can sell 3 times what it sold last year.

In the middle of December I predicted sales of 300 000 Wii U systems in January, based on average weekly worldwide sales of approximately 75 000 systems. It looks like that figure was almost spot on. However, that's largely thanks to strong week 1 sales. In December my prediction for February was another 300 000 systems, based on average weekly sales of approximately 75 000 systems. With the recent sale figures taken into account, Nintendo will have to sell 100 000-120 000 systems in week 8 and week 9 (the release weeks of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze in the westen markets), to reach 300 000 for February. That's not impossible to achievet, but it'll be a close call. Anything beyond 300 000 systems in February should be considered quite amazing sales for a system with such a software situation.

Key to sales is Nintendo's ability to attract casual gamers. Sales of Wii Party U suggests there is a slight shift of casual gamers toward Wii U. If Nintendo can market Wii Fit U right, the casual trend might pick up even more steam.

Didn't hit 300k for Jan and won't hit it for February either. Nintendo are shipping 390k (or are hoping too) for the entire quarter.

I dunno why people are making up figures at this point.

January last year was 57k in US, this year VGC has 109k? Why the 100% YoY increase?

Down 38k YOY in Japan, it's possible that WiiU is down WW as well.

You were the one claiming that December was overtracked, and as it turned out it was infact undertracked. Now you're doing the same thing for January eh?

Also in December of 2012 was it launch period, ofcourse it would sell well than, compare December 2013 to November 2013 and you'll see that all those factored in it having the biggest increase from all consoles( Percentage wise ofcourse).

December was an anomoly.

You must be slightly mad for saying that, how is it an anomaly?

Nintendo issued a price drop from 350$ to 300$ for Deluxe SKU that has 32GB of storage with one or two games bundled with it and Super Mario 3D World was released on November 22nd which is a big triple A title from Nintendo and most anticipated title on Nintendo's console in 2013. Wii U got plenty of software in Q3 and Q4 of 2013 when the game drought ended. Even Wii Party U pushed sales of the Wii U...

Software sells hardware, that is why some people in fact choose to get Xbox One over PlayStation 4 for example...

People bought original PlayStation because of software and not hardware over Nintendo 64 and same thing with PlayStation 2 over Xbox then Wii over Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 because of software. Software sells hardware... It is simple as that.

Because all of those measures were taken before December, yet they were down YOY in November (massively I might add) and down again in January. December was a blip, and now it's back to normal (which is being down YOY).

All I see is you throwing bunch of excuses, you say its anomaly because you want to see it and believe it that way rather than accept the facts that it wasn't an anomaly because each action has an reaction.

Right. Why was it down in Nov nearly 50% and down again in Jan this year then? Not to mention, it was basically flat in December, up like 40k? (less than 10%).

Because WIi U launched on November 18th 2012, it was a freaking console launch and you is practically impossible to beat YOY or equal it exactly one year after launch on same month. Also there is no way that PlayStation 4 this year will UP or Equal in YOY in November... Its a simple fact and you are just trying to go against the logic and historical evidence... Only console that I think broke YOY's launch month exactly one year later was the Wii.

Yeah, WiiU got an extra 18 days this year then .... who said you can't beat launch sales? Wii, PS3 and 360 all had better novembers than their launch (all november). 'Practically impossible' I don't think so. It's only Wiiu which has fallen down here. Except it halved. (Wii doubled for reference).

Any other myths you wanna sling out?
