Why?

Keep the Vita and actually support it with big titles. Fund the new games in the 3rd party franchises that made the PSP big. Stop putting games on both the PS3 and Vita.
Ideally they need to establish big handheld franchises out of Japan, especially ones that appeal to children. But that's going to be difficult to do, especially on the Vita.

Exactly, can't see the handheld market being any different years from now. it's essentially battle between tablets/smartphones and Nintendo.

With the market shrinking, I wouldn't think it'll be viable by the time Vita's due to be replaced.
Make it capable of emuling all Nintendo handheld games in the standard FW, mainly the newer games.

Don't make one... As much as I like their handhelds, SONY doesn't seem to give them the proper support a handheld needs to survive. In addition, they always seem to make a few (but large) design choices that rub most people the wrong way (Memory Sticks and their pricing for an obvious example).
I think if SONY went a little easier with the proprietary hardware/peripherals, lighter on the specs for the sake of pricing and battery life, and had 5 dedicated PSV devs, it would have been in a far better position.
EDIT: I'm also not against ktay95's idea AT ALL. Assuming the phone was at a resonable prince. S3/4 and iPhone5's (not sure what iteration these devices are on) aren't reasonably priced to me after seeing the Nexus 5.
4 ≈ One

True. I think it'd be best if they didn't replace and just try to support it for as long as possible, no need to release a successor.

no handheld. just an app for for sony smartphones/tablets/tvs that enables access to the playstation store to download and play/stream smaller games. they should also make the ps4 controller useable for those devices.

If they can get to the point where they're making money on the hardware, (are they there yet?) I'd continue it as long as possible if I were them; ride it out and make a little cash on the side.

Its quite depressing really because anyone who's held it knows it is a brilliant machine and capable of AAA games on the go. So assuming vita flops, Sony would have to be smart and go into the next handheld war with a better strategy. Nintendo aren't the real enemy (and may soon not be at all : more on that in another post) but the enemy is IOS and Android. I think, if you cant beat them, join them. A highly customised OS based on android OS, with two stores, Google Play and PS Store. A partnership in the handheld space with google would be killer too, where google can deploy some of their apps with exclusive features, such as youtube gmail etc. That satisfies the core gamer market and the casual market. Maybe a concept on Xperia Play but with a dedicated Playstaton controller, nubs etc. Also, power isn't everything, as evident by 3DS games, portables dont need powerful hardware, they need easy, cheap hardware that satisfies pick-up-and-play ethos. Your turn, hopefully cerny is watching and learning. |
