More options are always good imo.

But the choice to go all digital is already there...all this is doing is taking thing away for the purpose to try and sell to a niche amount of people.

Thanks, wanted to say that. We already saw how badly people want discless consoles. They want them so bad that the Phantom didn't even release at all. Anyone remember that thing? There are only very few people who would actually buy such a console and seeing how the demand for X1 is already dropping like a rock, I don't see a discless version selling any good at all.
That said, I love my PSP Go! But only because I hacked and play Nintendo Games in it all day long, Lulz. :P

A blu-ray drive would cost them $10 if that per console. They wouldn't drop the price by $100 afterwards...
I very much doubt it's happening.

All it does is add a new choice for those who already plan to go all digital this generation, they give up a bluray drive and they get a 1 TB drive that lets them store more digital games for the same price. It also offers a smaller form factor for those who don't want the behemoth One on their shelf. |
I can already slap a 1.5 tg hard drive in my ps4 and go all digital......................... It's not new.

If someone wants all digital why does he have to pay for a drive. People who want both options should buy the one with the bluray drive. It would be bad if Microsoft ditches the one with the drive and only sell the discless console.

Meh a discless console won't sell . I can do it now for cheaper on ps4.

I know what you're saying but PCs went from media to digital. Why couldn't a console? I believe a console could sell well without a disc-drive. Maybe not 1:1, but could push more than its fair share. |
Good point.
Though, again the audience for PC games are completely different to those who play primarily on consoles. People who have been gaming on PC before Steam and the like know how much hassle it is to keep games on their computer/s. Managing games library, manually update stuff, not to mention the technical jargon involved in getting the games running. Keeping them all under roof and having a unified platform for most games on the market for PC games has been a boon for a lot of people.
The same thing can't be said for a console gamers who've been accustomed to playing on retail discs bought from stores/online. And do not have the means to play them by just downloads. It might sound silly but having a bad/limited interenet connection can put consumers off buying a product especially when it doesn't effectively work out of the box like their previous machine. PC's at the end of the day still function as, well computers. Consumers have the choice on what they buy. PC gamers don't have the choice so it is generally accepted.
But anyway, long story short.. I just don't see it working out for consoles (for now). After several marked attempts from multiple manufacturers who venture in this most of them end up doing pretty badly. Anyway, an all digital console is inevitable.. it just wont be a thing for a while until everybody jump on board.
I read the rumor as an attempt to gut the console to save costs and compete with Sony for price.
It's too late for that, Microsoft. Once your initial sales steam fades your major competition will NOT be the PS4, but the Wii U. They're both weaker than the PS4, but the Wii U has the advantage of being appropriately priced for it's performance.
You don't want a $400 console. You want a $350 one.
