Forums - Nintendo - Mario Kart 8 releasing in May; Nintendo expects it to boost Wii U momentum

To do that they needed to release last holiday alongside 3D World. Too late, Nintendo, too late.

Right cos that makes proper business sense lol. Not

Nintendo should cut support to the Mario Kart Wii servers, that will help. If you want to play Mario Kart online, you need a Wii U.

It made bussiness sense for 3DS, and it's a proven strategy.

Proud to be the first cool Nintendo fan ever

Number ONE Zelda fan in the Universe

DKCTF didn't move consoles

Prediction: No Zelda HD for Wii U, quietly moved to the succesor

Predictions for Nintendo NX and Mobile

Nintendo also said that they would work to make sure that this isn't just a one/two week boost...which should imply release dates closer together for the second half of the year than what we have been seeing.

PS: there is no way of knowing how well Wii Fit U did unless Nintendo released numbers stating how many Fit meters they have sold. Judging sales strictly by using retail doesn't tell you very much...

While it's true that the circumstances surrounding Wii Fit U make accurate sales figures impossible, we can infer from hardware sales what effect it has had on the Wii U's momentum. Judging by its current sales numbers, it would not be too much.

I believe in honesty, civility, generosity, practicality, and impartiality.

So they'll let the system lose all of its momentum, then work to built back up again. Smart move.

I personally don't care about the May release date because I don't have the time to play it, but there's nothing else significant coming to Wii U between Feb & May. Its just gonna be a painful drought once again.

It's already lost all of its momentum...

Christmas ended, and so too did all efforts to advertise...

Have a nice day...

While I don't disagree, I will say that judging by Nintendo's handling of the property, I believe they (correctly) read the market and assumed that it would not have a large impact and  and treated it as such as to not waste marketing money (which should have been spend elsewhere but never was >.>)

Im not sure.. I wouldn't release two games like that at the same time, just me though but I was hoping mariokarts was released earlier than May but I am patient ( A rare breed patience these days lol )

That's a reasonable suggestion.

I will say, though, that the fact a success like Wii Fit U saw such a massive dip between generations leads me to question if other franchises that saw success last generation might see a similar trajectory.

It'll probably give the Wii U a significant sales boost for a week or two, but if they can use it as a launching pad for a new marketing campaign and keep up the momentum with monthly quality game releases for the rest of the year, AND release a MK8 Deluxe Wii U Holiday bundle for $300, I could see the console maybe start to turn around at that point.
