Forums - Microsoft - I Think Microsoft Should Enter The Handheld Market

Microsoft should not release a handheld for the following reasons:
1. Adding an extra handheld company would further break up the handheld market. Outside of Japan, there is little third party support for handhelds already and what support there is is divided between Sony and Nintendo. Adding another company would just create fewer games for each console.
2. To add to the point above, fewer games for each console would hurt Microsoft more than anybody. Nintendo has their first party games, and both Nintendo and Sony have Japanese developers...Microsoft relies more on third parties than anyone else and what they do have for first parties is devoted to the XBO. Like above, throwing a handheld into the market would decrease the amount of games elsewhere water down the market. The OP seems to present the idea that Rare could work on handhelds but not only has Rare lost a lot of its talent, but it also would not be able to release games at the same frequency as it did back in the SNES/N64 days (due to higher production costs and dev times).
3. Handheld territory is in Japan and Microsoft does not have the best history in Japan. I believe that a handheld that cannot stay afloat in Japan will have trouble making very much money.

With that said, I could see MS releasing a portable PC gaming device or a more games based phone device that may have moderate success while not competing directly with Nintendo and Sony...

Pff, handhelds? I think they should enter the Walkman market. I heard that's the hottest shit right now. But they need to make sure their machine has Blast processing power too, otherwise it'll have no chance.

for someone that is a sony enthusiast you are not really aware :P walkman is alive and kicking.... I can't stand sony for almost all their products but I would get a walkman over an iPod piece of crap any day.... then again I can't stand apple either lol :)

but in any case I agree I wouldn't go in the pure handheld market even for sony it's a brave endeavour imo

A pure handheld has limited use now. People want a device that does phone, games, social, communications, movies, music, etc. all in one. Nintendo dominates what is left in the market.

What I would like to see from MS is a laptop for both Xbox 360 and X1 like Ben Heck makes but at a reasonable price.

And then I would also like to see a phone where I can attach bars on each side that give me a controller. I find the screen sticks to be very crappy.

I personally believe an Xbox handheld would do quite well. Believe it or not, Microsoft has an entire belt of games that could be accessable for a handheld. Think of being able to play all your XBLA arcade titles on the go.

Also, they could have Rare work on platformers for the console, as well as a Killer Instinct. Imagine playing a new Conker, Banjo & Kazooie, Killer Instinct, Kameo, etc. Those games would be perfect fits for a handheld. Also, Halo Wars 2 would be cool.

What do you think? I think there is potential. Also, do you think it would sell well?

No, no no no no no no and frigging no.

for 3 big reasons.

1) handheld market is dying rapidly

2) handheld market is dying rapidly

3) handheld market is dying rapidly

Sony should stop handheld I guess !

They already have, it's called a windows phone.

Agreed.

No idea why some don't understand that iPhones, Androids, tablets, WP8, etc... are gaming devices.

Because if you use your smart phone for other things by the time you are ready to play a game the smartphone will be to tired to play. Thats why you need a single purpose device dedicated to playing games.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

Makes you wonder why so many people play games on their phones then.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

I would be absolutely shocked if Sony made another dedicated gaming handheld after the Vita.

I believe those days are over.
