Oh the full article makes it more clear. I guess it'll be like say Mario 3D World, the cat suit is a main power up for example, so maybe they'd release a smartphone Mario 3D World app that has a Mario catsuit mini-game or something.

Not a bad idea tbh. If they charge $1 for each minigame they can make a lot of money, plus it's advertisement for the real game on the 3DS and/or Wii U.

And more importantly, it will keep investors happy.

The demos will be free, but I suspect as time goes on and Nintendo sees the sheer number of downloads (which will probably be huge) ... it could lead to a more iOS/Android centric Nintendo that banks on things like free 2 play/freemium models. I dunno. I don't like where this is headed.

I wish they had just gotten their sh*t together with the Wii successor and made sane design decisions and sound software planning when making it, but alas. Had to bank the whole thing on another gimmick controller and this time it backfired. So now it's come to this.

I don't think it's demo in the gamer sense - as in a short version of the game as that would require porting the game to a new platform. Rather, I suspect it would be demos in the literal sense as in demonstrations of the game.

As long as they don't drop their console and handheld support I honestly don't care. They will keep the "casual" gamers happy with Mario 3D Crush and the "hardcore" gamers will be happy with full console and/or handheld games. Of course, Nintendo's marketing has to be very important here, because you don't want ALL users to go with the iOS/Android game.

If they start dropping support on the Wii U and 3DS then people (myself included) will be pissed. However, if they are very successful with this approach, they will probably keep both smartphone and console games.

But we are probably getting ahead of ourselves, this could be completely wrong.

Remember those Mario mini-games in Mario 64 DS (the touch stylus ones?). I suspect the demos will be like that, which will eventually lead to Nintendogs/Brain Training on iOS/Android, and then eventually the Virtual Console, and after that ... ugh.

How in the fuck do you make "game demos" for devices whose ONLY input is a touchscreen, when the demos are for games for a system that has a FULL CONTROLLER that also happens to have a touch screen? Makes zero sense.

Phones and tablets have controller support. Moga and Ps3 controllers work great.

No, it will be pop ads that you can block. Or on websites that you can ignore
Just more Internet advertising.

Come on, Nintendo doesn't even realease demos of their games in their own consoles, why would they do so on mobiles.
And if it's mobile content, it is money and content development spent on another device that should have been invested in their platform.

It'll probably be games just like these:

Wasted resources used on a different input style that also requires a game engine porting. Pure BS.

The Nikkei just click baited the shit out of everyone and it worked.

As for the impending Nintendo Direct...well, of course. They do press events after every 3rd quarter financial report and of recent years that's included an ND.

Making game demos is completely BS, however something like a small mini game based on Mario's Cat suit for smartphones is not really something out of the question. I'm not completely in favor of that but I'm not against either (as long as they keep their consoles support)
