The series is great, but It's extremely overrated.

Basically any franchise that gets tons of press and hype and sells truckloads of copies for each installment is usually labeled "overrated". By extension... Pokemon is overrated, Mario is overrated, Halo is overrated, GT is overrated, FIFA is overrated, etc.

You know what's overrated to me? Less popular games and franchises that are always deemed "underrated" by overzealous gamers who try to push them on everyone else and make people feel guilty for not having even heard of said games let alone played them.

so what,if it's not broke why fix it?

It is broke though, try get all pigeons in GTA IV or all collectables in GTA V without using a guide.  In earlier games the worlds were more basic and it was very easy to search them and find collectables, that doesn't work in modern GTA anymore, when a guide is required the design has failed.  Same for stunt jumps, in early games if you saw a ramp of some kind it was a stunt jump, but in modern games there are ramps everywhere but only a small amount count as jumps, so no way to complete them without a guide.  Combat is still at PS2 levels when others games have long moved on.  The world is too big for the limited transport options it provides, driving for 5 minutes to get to a mission start or mission objective is shitty design.  And so on.

...and I've not even started on what is wrong with the online.

I respectfully disagree with you,but I actually agree with you about the online. As much as I love rockstar and the gta franchise, the one thing rockstar has always sucked at is there online modes.

Gameplay wise absolutely overrated.
Hard for me to grasp that a game who has less features than any other open world game could be so well regarded.
As I say every year to GTA: Call me when I can climb shit and shoot electricity out of my hands.

Just because its not infamous it doesnt mean its overrated

Liked GTA III, loved Vice City, San Andreas was ok, totally loathed GTA IV, wouldn't touch GTA V with a ten foot pole.

It's also not Farcry, Just Cause, Saints Row, Crackdown, Dead Rising, Sleeping Dogs, The Saboteur, Prototype or Watch Dogs. Hell, it's not even Postal.

All these games are contemporary open world games that have unique gameplay elements that elevate above "take that gun, shoot that guy" and "take that car, drive to that point". GTA is just boring and I see no point in choosing it over any of the games I mentioned.

Sure GTA might be the mother of all these but it sure hasn't changed since its first installment and because of that was overtaken by her sons.

Which law states that something unique is automatically better than something which isnt unique?

do you know most unique games fail because no-one likes them?

do you know why people like shooting? because its fun.

It's my law and I live by it. Why should I play the same game over and over. There are too many games out there to play the most generic titles.
Uniqueness should be incentivised but in a world of COD and GTA selling like hotcakes it is even discouraged.

Unique games fail because people are boring and like to play boring games.
