Forums - Sales - PS4 will sell 200 million console sales this generation?

Combined with being a game system, media hub and its online services the PS4 has a lot to offer in regards to delivering games and services to attract more consumers to purchase the PS4 ahead of the other two consoles.
More PS3 games will become available via download or in HD releases on PS4 as this generation
The PS4 will be the most powerful console system in terms of its processing speed, memory and graphical power as well as being the console sales leader for this generation. The PS4 will define the 8th generation and the other two consoles will do well if they can sell a combined tally of 100 million consoles.

The PS4 has the potential to reach 200 million and pass the PS2s life time sales total of 160 million.

200M looks excessive. 195M max.

Stwike him, Centuwion. Stwike him vewy wuffly! (Pontius Pilate, "Life of Brian")
A fart without stink is like a sky without stars.
TGS, Third Grade Shooter: brand new genre invented by Kevin Butler exclusively for Natal WiiToo Kinect. PEW! PEW-PEW-PEW!

I don't care as long as they move all games in ps3 development and move then to ps4 asap.

This will be fun to bump in 6 year's time.

Possible. I'd actually love to see a console sell 200 million even if that means the competition just got brutally murdered.

Hopefully the PS4 will be well over 130 million in 6 years time and passed PS1, Wii in sales and moved into second highset selling console of all time, only behind the PS2. By its 10 year aniversary the PS4 will be closing in on the magical 200 million milestone. 200 million sales estimate is based on a 10+ year lifespan with big sales years in the first 6 years. PS4 sales taper off from 7 to 10+ years on the market. PS5 arrives 7 years after the launch of PS4 in 2020.

I honestly appreciate your reply. Unfortunately, your rose-colored glasses are out in full effect right now.

1) It's a known fact that hype for the system is dying down. This is normal.

2) There's no killer app on the PS4 right now to sustain its sales. Right now, people are simply buying it because it's the next Playstation.

3) Sony is in some serious financial trouble, but that isn't to say they can't turn it around.

4) You do realize that many 3rd parties "royalties" are off set from the free marketing Sony provides to them, right? You knew this, I'm sure.

1. Hype isn't as strong as it was at launch, sure, but that doesn't mean that the console doesn't have strong ongoing momentum.

2. And being the next Playstation is enough for it to keep selling for large parts of this year. People are just tired of last gen, so they don't need that one killer exclusive to make the switch to the PS4, many of the cross gen titles coming this year will be enough to make people buy a new console. At the end of the year and definitely next year Sony will have to start putting out their big exclusive games though.

3. Agreed

4. No, I didn't know that and I would appreciate it if you could further explain that point, what free marketing are you talking about?

Also I might be a bit too optimistic but I can't shake the feeling that you're a bit too pessimistic because of the whole Wii U situation ;)

1) Unfortunately, that's not how it works in the real world. For an entertainment medium to continue to sell, it has to provide a service that... Well... Entertains. Without that service, the product dies. Don't you agree?

2) Sorry, it's not enough. The PS3 ought to be the biggest example. Sony sold the PS3 thinking that because it's was the "next Playstation" that people would just buy it without games. Look how that turned out.

3) :D

4) I posted multiple urls. You should go back a few pages and check them out.

The power of a console is just a gimmick. Once the novelty wears off, you will no longer be concerned about its power. You'll be more concerned about its games.

Also, I don't believe the online delivery of games on the PS4 is any different than what both Nintendo and Microsoft offer. If anything, Nintendo's offerings would be more attractive since the eShop has a larger variety of games to download via eShop titles and their Virtual Console. Sony and Microsoft, on the other hand, haven't been out long enough to establish such a library. Also, their game downloads are extremely large - many of them towering over 20 gigs in size. Neither Sony's or Microsoft's systems, as of yet, offer external HDD options. So, the premise of downloading games is more of a hurdle for an average consumer than a benefit. Even though you can swap out the PS4 internal HDD, that option requires a bit of work and technical know-how that many average consumers do not have.

Having the PS4 define the 8th generation will be pretty worrying. Essentially, the PS4 is a step down from the PS3 since it doesn't offer many of the capabilities the PS3 offered. The only thing the PS4 has over the PS3 is more power. If more power is what defines the 8th generation, then the video game industry is in trouble.
