I would say a large majority of people bought a PS4 for upcoming games they like and the fact that games that are on the PS3 are also on the PS4, but neither of us know that.

Software is and always has been the driving force being sales.     You need to brush up on some video game history if you think so.   The PS2's graphics sucked compared to the Gamecube and Xbox, but since it had GTA,Kingdom Hearts, FInal Fantasy, Gran Turismo and Metal Gear Solid is outsold the other two easily, add on the DVD player factor and it destroyed them.     Go look at every single console ever and it's always been the games that have been the deciding factor, not the console specs.   Here's another great example.    PSP vs. Vita.    PSP even with the Nintendo DS on the market was able to sell 80+ million consoles (53 percent of the DS).   Why?  Because Grand Theft Auto and Monster Hunter were huge hits.    The Vita added much more graphic power but doesnt have any software that people care about and it has only sold 7.3 million (17 percent of 3DS).   The only territory it's doing alright in is Japan, and once again it's because there is alot of japanese aimed software to push the console.    Launches are built on hyping the console itself because there ussually isn't much software, but after the initial burst is gone, it's all about the games.  Same goes if your initial burst sucks.  PS3 and 3DS looked to be dead in the water but once the software came sales took off.

Of course. If hardware didn't matter we wouldn't get heated debates over this. Developers have shown their distaste at Wii U's performance from their initial testings (DICE, Bethesda, Epic Games, 4A Games etc). The disparity between different systems can greatly affect whether a game is going to be considered for release on a platform. It isn't only to do with power though. There are many other factors like; SDK's, ease of development, tools, online infrastructure, architectures and so on.

Also, if hardware didn't matter why did millions of gamers go out and buy the very same games that are on the PS3/360 on the PS4/s and Xbox One's? UK hardware sales were in a slump and software down on all counts prior to the launch of the next gen consoles. And how there's a massive growth with new kit/s. Why is that? If there isn't anything distinguishing the last generation of hardware why would anyone bother with new consoles?

You make it sound as if it's just graphics lol Look at games like knack and resogun. They may look simple but current gen consoles can't run them. Too many objects moving in real time. What are you going to tell me now? That knack and resogun aren't creative and original ideas?
