So much emphasis on Indies. Yawn.

Shame the article fails to point out its about $2000 cheaper to release on Xbox One. Microsoft don't charge $2500 for a dev kit like Sony. Why did the article miss that off? I expect from this year onwards Xbox One to be the console of choice for Indies due to less costs, meaning the OP will be a moot point.

Seems you know nothing again, you can get 4 PS4 kits for the cost of an X1 kit,  but thats only if your buying, right now MS and Sony are lending kits to most indies.

This will change however if MS can live up to there promise of all consoles being usable as a kit.

Holy fudge how much are you assuming the XBONE and PS4 kits costs?

Im not assuming anything, ive seen.

MS may have differnt rules for indies tho, they had alot of making up to do to win them back, i wouldnt know tho i dont work for an indie.

I believe it is.

Sony have only  'LENT' 'chosen' indie devs PS4 devkits for 1 year. After which they have to pay. Developers have confirmed it is indeed $2000 more expensive on PS4 Devkits. Largely thanks to every Xbox One being a devkit. Sony havent given ANY developer ANYTHING for FREE. Here read this article.

That's the issue... no Xbone right now is a devkit.

It is the same like PS4... MS lent for free the devkit like Sony with PS4... and if you want more or your project didn't pass to free kits you need to buy with similar prices.

Yes but there is a difference.

Sony are expecting payment after 1 year. Microsoft are implementing the every console this year, meaning for an indie dev on PS4 to keep making they have to pay. For the indie dev on Xbox One they just give the borrowed one back. All developers are saying they have to pay after 1 year on PS4. And that Microsofts option is cheaper. Theres 100's more articles confirming thae same thing.

As I said, I expect this year the lead Indie platform due to costs will be Xbox One. Especially as I understand some Indies have already starting paying as their first year is already up.

Yup bad article, just the first paragraph which is Polygon comparing a PS4 dev kit to a X1 retail Unit, which as i said if MS live up to that promise great, but right now retail kits cant be used as dev kits and the dev kits dont cost $500.

Can you tell me in PM just a general figure for XBONE then?

I know the exact price of PS4 kits and four times that just seems crazy.

But to make a full game don't you need extra ram and processing power in the devkit to run debugging tools beside the game?
If you use the final specced machine as a dev tool it will limit what you can make and/or make more difficult.

we've had this exact same scenario posted about a dozen times now...

I'm pretty sick of hearing about indies tbh.

I'm sure it will die down when both systems have a decent library of retail games though.... thank god.

i hope not, indies are amazing, not all of course, but a lot. you might not like indie games, but for the many who do, like myself, this issue with ID@xbox rather important to know, because it shows where indies are going, and thats playstation.

this.  i spend more money on indies then big publishers these days.   it's important to me what they are doing.

so far with my PS4 i spent more time on Dont Starve than Fifa and Killzone combined. i would recommend dont starve btw, such an amazing game.

I still don't understand what MS is trying to achieve with the exclusivity clause. That's really anti developer and anti consumer.

they are trying to achieve launch parity...

...it means that small developers that cannot launch on all platforms at once are forced to chose xbox before playstation if they want to be multiplatform which means that xbox gets a bunch of timed exclusives without having to entice developers (aka moneyhat) for them.   it means playstation can't get any free timed exclusive that would make xbox look like a second rate system.

as much as i hate to say it, this might be good business.   right now it's a gamble with how successful will sony be relative to MS.   if MS has a big enough market share that indie's feel that have to be multiplat xbox will get a bunch of free timed exclusives.   if sony pulls far enough ahead of MS that indies don't feel the need to be on xbox they'll start loosing games that become defecto playstation/pc exclusives.   ...bullies can only bully if they are viewed as strong.

we'll see how this plays out.  but as a playstation fan and a fan of indie games i know what i'm rooting for.
