Still think more people buy their vita games digital than 3ds users buy digital. Numbers are just slightly skewed in that regard, but of course numbers will always be better for 3ds given the userbase, no contest. It is a bit strange that Western developers sell more 3rd party vita games than Japanese developers...

3DS eshop sales are soaring.  I'm sure the percentages would be about the same if adding those.  Not sure how the 3rd party retail games are selling on the eshop but Nintendo first party digital titles such as Animal Crossing: New Leaf are selling in the millions.  AC:NL will probably end up selling at least +5m digital sales lifetime.

I wish we could get actually digital numbers and we could stop this arugment over which system has better sales on online, I feel like vita fans try to use it as a shield in debates like this that well if had the digital numbers it be a much closer race. There are also games like Gunmen Clive that sell better on the eshop that they do on the iOS or Playstore on Android.

Oh no, I know you're a Nintendo fan =) I just don't think there's any reason at all to publish a game on the Vita while ignoring the 3DS.

Perhaps not. But just because Capcom and Square-Enix can make loads of money on the 3DS doesn't mean that indie developers and smaller publishers are guaranteed greater profits on that platform simply by virtue of its install base.

I still think multiplatform is the way to go for indies and smaller publishers. Even in the examples where the Vita versions of multiplats outsold the 3DS versions, the sales were usually pretty close, showing that if you've got a smaller title on your hands, releasing on both platforms is an effective way to double your sales.

I completely agree with the bolded. As an indie, multiplat is the way to go!

The point of this thread is to show that 3rd parties isn't doing better with Vita, as some has wanted us to believe.

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

Weeeell, if you read the first part of my OP you could actually follow my train of thought, and how I ended up doing this thread ^^ I was curious as to why 3rd parties would ever choose the Vita over the 3DS. Apparently, there is no justifiable reason.

Ehh, there's something to be said for the lack of competition on the Vita. Publishers don't have to worry about competing with the likes of Monster Hunter, Dragon Quest, and first-party Nintendo games... come to think of it, they don't have to worry about competing with Sony's first-party games, either.

Nintendo also take much higher percentages and charge higher licensing which puts off smaller developers and publishers.

Would love a source supporting this statement. That would be pretty good.

Preferably not something from 2010 or earlier, if you please.

They do not publicly list these licensing fees and royalty costs, and the actual figures are not fixed, they vary from publishers to publisher on agreed rates, however these rates are on average 20-30% higher than rates offered by both Sony and Microsoft, a huge reduction from the Nintendo of old, who pre-2005 would charge rates of 45-60% higher than Sony and Microsoft, needless to say as it stands now, for each game released on the 3DS, the publisher pays Nintendo on average $3.50 more than they pay Sony for releasing on the Vita.

If you want cold hardcopy to browse through yourself, I suggest you become a licensed developer too.

And OP - While developers can set their own prices, reducing the price does not reduce the amount they pay to Nintendo, so the only option is to increase the price beyond what it would normally have been, if they want to boost the income for that title, the obvious drawback here is that it's significantly higher in price than on competing platforms, and indeed, other software released by larger publishers who can take the hit in royalties, as such their only option is to take the hit and hope it sells enough to offset the fees associated with it.

This however, is not an option for many smaller developers.

There are less financial burdens, less red tape and less risk with releasing games on the Vita, PSP, PS3 and PS4, thats why, despite OPs logic, third parties still support the Vita as well as the 3DS, and in some cases, the Vita instead of the 3DS.

Look at Hyper Light Drifter, the developers first console to be supported in their kickstarter was the PS3 and Vita, it was only after heavy funding that they made WiiU a stretch goal, 3DS never even made the cut until long after the Kickstarter ended and they had received funding from elsewhere too, and even then, 3DS is on their "potentially" list, last time i checked, and not their "definitely" list.

Are you a licensed developer for all three companies, then?

These numbers only show that Sony has to increase the install base asap, because it will be beneficial both for Sony and 3rd parties. At 7.5 mil Vita is finally becoming more than just a joke and is slowly starting to become reasonable. I just hope that once they reach 9-10 mil they make a hard push at the biggest Western devs like Rockstar, Bethesda, Activision, EA, Ubisoft. They need their help and 3rd parties would benefit long term as well from the creation of this additional market. If only other divisions finally gave Sony a break, so that they could actually invest some money into what will earn them money a bit further down the line than just in a couple of days...

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

As of May 2013 just for Nintendo and Sony, prior to that, All three, (with PC, Mac and Linux supported too).

Useless Trivia: I started developing in 1996 for the Sega Saturn.

Yeah, it WILL be very interesting to see future multiplat (Vita/3DS) games, and how those will pan out once the Vita gets more of an instal base. I wonder what it will take for Rockstar, Bethesda and the likes to actually develop for the Vita (and I'm even MORE curious what'll take for them to do a 3DS game).

3rd parties would benefit long term IF the Vita actually takes off. After 2 years on the market, I'm starting to doubt it'll ever will...

A lot are put off purely from a demographical minority stand point.

All you have to do is compare the games on each platform. The 3DS top 10 consists mostly of great exclusives like Monster Hunter 4, Kingdom Hearts, Resident Evil Revelations and Dragon Quest. Comparably the Vita has pretty poor exclusives like COD: Declassified (33 metacritic), Assassins Creed: Liberation (70)( and Ragnarok Odyssey(66) and then a bunch of late ports.

I think the Vita games sold good considering the majority of them shouldn't have sold at all. Also the fact that Persona 4 Golden outsold almost every other game in the franchise is a good testament to the systems ability to sell high quality 3rd party content. If only there were more of it (particularly in the form exclusives)
