Forums - Sales - Uncharted is now a bigger IP Than Zelda

@Kane: I'm having trouble quoting.

I would argue Zelda is a more relevant franchise to the video game industry, to video game fans, and to video game critics and essayists. It has had a much greater impact on the industry in general and the action-adventure genre in particular. It is certainly more of a household name.

No, it isnt. It has a bigger legacy thanks to its 30 year life, but that should come at no surprise. Its more relevant to SOME fans, certanly not me, and some critics, not majority of them. It had more of an impact when NES was resurecting the industry, but since the 90's it had almost no impact, whereas Uncharted already had impact on games such as Tomb raider and star wars.

In terms of discussions, this is based only on my own observations, on this site and others, and in conversations with video game enthusiasts in the real world. I'm afraid I can't really quantify it. But I do believe Zelda causes more controversies and more heated debate, among the fan base and outside of it.

Well, at least you admited its by your own merits

More acclaimed really isn't up for debate. I'm not sure why you identified that as "factually wrong." In terms of aggregate critical scores, Zelda outpaces Uncharted. In terms of top 100 and top 10 lists, completed by fans and critics, Zelda games far outpace Uncharted games. Ocarina of Time and A Link to the Past, in particular, are more critically-acclaimed than any Uncharted title.

What? Uncharted has a higher score on averige than Zelda, as for top 10/100 lists, you'd be hard pressed to find a list without uncharted 2 in it. And the franchise only has 4 games so far, whereas Zelda has 20+. And no LttP doesnt beat Uncharted 2 (95 vs 96) even tho UC2 has like 4 times more reviews to drag its averige score down.

Ocarina of time does beat it, but only with 22 reviews (compared to 100+ uc2 reviews). The score would have went down, had the game been reviewed more often. In fact, OoT on 3DS (an improved version of the game) fell short of UC2's score (96 vs 94)

And, lastly, of course "beloved" is highly subjective. I never said otherwise. Again, this is based on my observations. I have no evidence to support it. I think such evidence would be impossible to produce.

Fair enough

No question about on consoles uncharted is the bigger franchise now, zelda sky sword was a huge flop on a user base near 100 million, ps4 will see a huge difference in sales between these 2 franchises with zelda wiiu selling about as half as much as uncharted 4.

Ocarina of Time, Link to the Past, link between worlds are. Aww did i ruin your poor point? Yeah not every Zelda game is innovative, but how many Innovative Uncharted games can you count? None? Aww... thats that then.

WOW LOL

Calm down.

I'm perfectly calm, but i did struggle to find the point of your post. ^^ Well. within forums rules that is.

It was actually as simple of a point there is. Neither Twilight Princess nor Skyward Sword are innovative. What's the hard part? lol

I could push my reasoning but your attitude doesn't invite further discussion. Call me when you're sober.

@Kane:

Our debate highlights why this is such an inappropriate comparison. We just can't compare a 30-year old series that comes with a lot of history and baggage with such a newly-minted series, even if both are commercially and critically successful. Maybe in 10 or 15 years, Uncharted 2 will be generally considered greater than Ocarina. And maybe the Uncharted series will be more in the hearts and minds of consumers. But right now it's too early to make these calls.

I hope Uncharted's success carries onto the PS4. It's such a great series. It really could become Sony's Zelda. Now we just need to bring back Crash so we have a "Mario"...and we also need a better shooter. Both Resistance and Killzone have failed to become Sony's Halo.

Zelda is still great but it really seems past it's prime. It's like Jordan playing for the Wizards...still a 20+ ppg player with tons of experience and a large fan base, but it's not as good as Chicago Bulls Jordan.

Please... Uncharted is a decent IP, but in terms of innovation its nowhere near the Zelda series.

Innovation has nothing to do with how big an IP is Nem.

That said.

I still think its too early to say Uncharted is a bigger IP than The Legend of Zelda. While the PS3 games have sold incredibly well, Golden Abyss on Vita hasnt done anything substantial. Then we have TLoZ games that are consistent multi-million sellers no matter the platform, with even the spinoff titles being able to sell many millions - http://www.vgchartz.com/game/13012/links-crossbow-training/

Link's Crossbow Training

Global Total as of 04th Jan 2014 (units): 4.93m
Platform: Wii
Developer: Nintendo EAD Genre: Shooter

Maybe if Uncharted PS4 goes on to top 6 Million like 2 and 3 we can start to say Uncharted has surpassed TLoZ, but right now its really too soon.

Zelda honestly isn't even from a pure sales POV one of Nintendo's top five franchises.

Mario (both 2D and 3D), Mario Kart, Smash Brothers, Animal Crossing, Pokemon, and probably even Donkey Kong Country fairly consistently outsell the Zelda series.

No offense to Uncharted as well but I think it's sales are somewhat inflated by massive bundling and discounting of the games. Sony bundles Uncharted even with Dual Shock controllers for next to nothing, lol, I think standalone sales would be a sizable chunk lower.

I'm a fan of both, and i gotta know, what was the point of this? Zelda releases have been more frequent anyway

Pretty sure Zelda is still the dominant IP, despite my dislike for it.

Well, obviously I have a rooting interest in this debate

But, seriously, you need to factor in other criteria, not just sales figures. I'd argue Zelda remains the more relevant franchise, the more discussed franchise, the more acclaimed franchise, and the more beloved franchise.

More relevant to Nintendo , which itself is becoming irrelevant in todays industry

More dicussed franchise? How so?

The more acclaimed franchise? Factually wrong.

More beloved? Highly subjective

More relevant: I don't see any games or game developers that show or express that they have been influenced in any way by the Uncharted series.

Most discussed: just type the words 'Zelda theory' on Youtube and see it for yourself.

More acclaimed: for critical acclaim check these links out. http://www.gamerankings.com/browse.html?site=&cat=0&year=0&numrev=1&sort=0&letter=&search=Zelda. And this http://www.gamerankings.com/browse.html?site=&cat=0&year=0&numrev=1&sort=0&letter=&search=Uncharted.

More beloved: check this out. http://youtu.be/QNdEO5lnBz8.

I love both series, but it's clear to me that Zelda remains the bigger franchise. Maybe things change when Uncharted 4 and Zelda Wii U are released. We don't know
