Forums - General - Microsoft ditching HD DVD?

Old is an understatement. That article is from January 2006 for cryin out loud.

I think that it is a great idea for Sony to incorporate blu-ray capabilities within the PS3, as the cell gets to do double duty with both games and blu-ray movies, which cuts down on the cost if you want to do both. If you bought a separate blu-ray DVD player, you would have to buy another processor, another GPU, etc etc so the customer just gets more bang for their buck when they buy something that can do both.

Damn it apparently it is an old article, I found it posted elsewhere and couldn't read the translation to see a date or whatever so yeah apparently they had just posted an old article for some reason or other.... Sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

ya, but this could be bad for the xbox 360. If they sell it for $250 or higher, everyone will learn that the PS3 was actually a good deal this whole time. Then again, i lets you have the option of having a blu-ray

Microsoft had a press release to end the speculation of a Blu-Ray drive on the 360. They said they were committed to HD-DVD and had no plans to bring out a Blu-Ray drive for the 360. (source: http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/xbox-360/nope-xbox-360-wont-do-bluray-149197.php )

i don't think this is a big deal for sales because people don't buy consoles for the movies, they buy it for the games, and right now, Microsoft has better games for the 360 than Sony does for the PS3.

People won't be buying the Ps3 for its Blu-Ray player anymore though now that it will be available on the 360 for the same price. It would make me very very happy to see the PS3 hurt but this clearly isn't true.

And with Sin City and 300 comming out exclusive for HD-DVD, I don't see the HD-DVD format failing in the states.

300 is not HD-DVD exclusive: http://www.amazon.com/300-Blu-ray-Gerard-Butler/dp/B000Q6GX5Y

And the chances of Sin City being HD-DVD exclusive are slim. It was released on UMD for the PSP.

I know this news is old, and it has already been debunked by Microsoft, but it wouldn't hurt Sony.

Anyone who thinks Blu-ray was placed inside the PS3 solely for game use is sorely mistaken. It gives them a leg up, the ONLY leg up, in the next-gen DVD war. Imagine Blu-ray without the PS3. Dead in the water. Sony would LOVE Microsoft to release a Blu-ray add-on. That would be pretty much handing the Next-Gen DVD War to Sony on a silver platter.

Then I guess claims that Warner Brothers was HD-DVD exclusive were bogus

Hmm, I don't think I've ever heard Warner Bros being exclusive to either camp. They are a big proponent of both. As a matter of fact, the companies that release for both sides are making the most revenue now.
