Forums - Gaming - Why we really have no clue which console will win this gen.

So I have seen alot of forum posts (too many), about why Wii U, Xbone, and PS4 will all be either big winners or losers this gen, and the bottom line to me is that not one console has either released or atleast shown that killer app that will skyrocket sales.   Wii U is currently at 5.3m, PS4 at 4.4.m, and Xbone at 3.1m., but when talking about which will sell 80+ million consoles, those numbers all all pretty irrelevent.   The Wii last gen had its 1st killer app day 1 in Wii Sports, it was revolutionary, it worked well, and everyone from casual to hardcore wanted to play it. The eventual 81+ million it moved in bundled/retail software is a number that I do not think any game will ever come close to again.   Xbox 360 didnt really have a huge console seller at 1st, but built a nice library very quickly with the Guitar Heros,Gears of War, Mass Effect, and eventually Halo 3, and thats not even mentioning how much of a bump the Kinect gave when it 1st came out.  The PS3's early problems had alot to do with price, but it also had alot to do with the fact that games like God of War III, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Gran Turismo 5 took a long time to come out.  Once they did, coupled with a price drop sales picked up.   On top of that the biggest console sellers for PS3 and 360 last gen were Call of Duty, GTA, and FIFA, all of which are 3rd party, which makes the fact that their lifetime sales are so even, not suprising.

So theres my last gen rundown, but quite honestly I am still waiting to see "that" game.  Wii U is getting alot of really good games, and not doubt the combination of Smash Bros/Mario Kart/ X / Donkey Kong / Hyrule Warriors (for Japan), will help pick up sales, but none of those are going to skyrocket it to 80+ million territory.  PS4 and Xbone both have had great launches but they also launched with their 2 biggest console sellers from the last 5 years (COD and FIFA), and the yearly releases for those franchises are not going to have as great of an effect on sales as they did last generation.  My point is that this generation is still wide open.  If Nintendo stops being stubborn, and makes a true open world Pokemon RPG, that would be a game changer.   Naughty Dog has been on a roll lately, but Sony needs to realize that games like Uncharted and TLOU are never going to move more then 6 million, which is great but not game changing.  If they had them develop something great that appeals to a much wider auidence it could be a game changer.  Microsoft has already killed Gears of War and Fable, and from the only 930k sold of Forza 5, they have pretty much killed that too, and now are just left with Halo.  They need some more 1st party hits, and they are going to need them soon, but all it takes is one game to really catch on (could be TItanfall, but we will see how big it actually gets).     Maybe I am just off here and the PS4 will sell 150 million, Xbone 75 million, and Wii U 15 million, but software has almost always been the deciding factor every gen, and without any DVD/Motion Control factor this gen, I think it will be more true now then ever.

Hahaha I love these posts, somehow it always sounds like it's downplaying the success of the PS4.

Sorry buddy, you may not have a clue which console will win this gen but I do. I can say with confidence that PS4 will lead this gen. It will outsell the xbone and wii u combined in the end.

Open world pokemon is a game changer? Lol nope. Mario is a bigger franchise than Pokemon, Mario isnt helping the wii u. Making a open world pokemon for wii u will render the 3DS useless. Why buy the 3DS games when you can buy the real experience on the console? It will never happen because it will cost many x more than developing a handheld version. Imo the last chance for Wii u is MK8, if that doesnt do good nothing will imo. No X, no Bayo 2, no whatever else they got in stores has the recognition of Mario.

Mario is not a bigger seller then Pokemon anymore.  When Nintendo was making a new Mario game once every 3 - 4 years it was but now that they have released a new one between the 2D/3D style pretty much every year for 7 years now its value has been decreased by alot.   Pokemon X/Y has been out for 3 months and is already the top selling game on 3DS, and thats only a year after they brought out Black/White 2.   The only 2 franchises that sell more then Pokemon now are COD and GTA.   Yes they could hurt their handheld sales, but at the benefit of moving atleast 8 - 10 million Wii U's and along with all other software that those owners will buy.   X, Bayonetta, and Hyrule Warriors all exist because Nintendo is making sure to lock up the Japanese market, which it no doubt will considering that PS4/Xbone have nothing that will interest the Japanese.    PS4 could no doubt lead this gen but to call it a lock is ridiculous.  The PS3 would have only sold maybe 40 million consoles if it wasnt for COD/FIFA, good luck being carried by those 2 for 2 generations in a row.

Mario kart and smash will. I find hilarious the people underestimete both games ability to move HW.
A MK8 or Smash bundle with the game pre-installed at 200$ will sell GANGBUSTERS on black friday/holidays/golden week etc.
2014 and 2015 will be the peak years, i expect WiiU to sell 12m+ between the two...which is not much compared to Wii or PS4 but still it may let WiiU reach N64 numbers.

Yes Mario Kart and Smash Bros are big franchises but they will basically push hardware to GC/N64 levels. People arent underestimating those games, most people are actually being pretty realistic about them. Mario Kart beneffited greatly from the casual audience and huge install base on Wii which Wii U does not have. Smash Bros is now multiplat releasing at the same time as the 3DS version and since it currently has 8x the install base plus being much cheaper and Japan being so handheld centric, its very feasible that version eats into the console version sales.

Its very realistic to believe these games revert back to there pre-Wii level of sales which is 5.5-7m for Smash Bros and 7-10m for Mario Kart. The op is talking about a game that can boost sales to 80m+ which these games certainly wont.

If it wasnt for Smash Bros and Mario Kart, the Gamecube would have been flopped so hard that Nintendo may not have ever even made the Wii.   The good news is that the gap between the 1st and Melee was only 2 years and it saw 1.5 million in growth, while the gap between Melee and Brawl was 6.5 years and it saw 5 million in growth.   I'm not saying that it will see another 5 million bump, but we just saw with GTA 5 the effect that making people wait a long time can have on a games sales.  I would make a prediction on Mario Kart 8's sales, but I suspect Nintendo will bundle it and that could make a massive difference.

Nothing brings back Wii U from the dumpster it is in, up to being the market leader. My original prediction for it was same as yours - between N64 and 40 millions, now I don't even think it can reach N64 levels, not after a freaking 3 million selling year, plus I think Nintendo won't ride it off for too long, kill it prematurely and have a successor on holiday 2016. If they won't get a lucky golden shot like with the Wii, I expect it to be another flop. Maybe they will make the speculated console/handheld hybrid, that may work.

But yeah, of course it's still an open race between Xbone and the PS4 considering how relatively close they are to each other. It's just that everything points to the PS4. Xbone is dead on arrival in Japan, so at the end of the gen there should be maybe even 10 million PS4s more there. And I honestly don't see the Xbone doing better in Europe, it's not a "Japan" situation but for me the chances are really minimal to even remotely keep up with the PS4 there.
NA I expect them to be close, even Xbone on top is more plausible imo but the marketshare not to be over 10% in anyone's favour. Of course Xbox fans like to talk about the "infinite potential", "almost unlimited" resources of MS that they can throw at the Xbox division and it will have ever exclusive, retail for peanuts and have huge marketing. But all this at what cost? Microsoft have shown in the later half of the 7th gen that profits are more important for them than marketshare. That's the way I see things playing out.

So it is happening...PS4 preorder.

Greatness Awaits!

Yep GC would have sold less without those games but that doesnt change the fact that they couldnt push It past 22m. Mario Kart was bundled on GC as well and like I said Smash is releasing at the same time on 3DS which could potentially cut off any growth on the console version.

The Gamecube has 2 main problems that killed it.  1. PS2 had a DVD player, which was massive in an era where most gamers were younger and parents were buying the consoles.  2. The lineup was all aimed at the same crowd.  As a  15 year old high schooler, I thought it was the greatest console ever, but looking back games like F-Zero GX, Luigi's Mansion, Mario Sunshine, SSBM, Resident Evil 4, Metroid Prime, Custom Robo, and pretty much every 3rd and most 1st party games were all aimed at hardcore games.     The 3DS version could hurt growth, but at the same time we are talking about the best selling fighting game of all time.   Even if the Sales are pretty even, Its still going to move atleast 7 - 8 million on Wii U and 6 -7 million on 3DS.

Thats not what I meant. The best selling Mario >>>>> best selling Pokemon. MK8 and NSMB sold 30 million each on Wii. No pokemon does that.

Pokemon is not a game changer, Pokemon will not save the wii u. Pokemon will stay on handhelds for obvious reasons: its cheap to make and sells shit tons, why waste money for a HD game that wont bring as much money and kill your handheld. Nintendo isnt stupid, they know this. Thats why they dont do a full poke game.

The last chance is Mario kart 8. Its the only game from a franchise left that casuals bought on Wii. If it fails to uplift wii u sales by several times, nothing will.

Yes, this generation can go any direction...

When was Nintendo making Mario every 3-4 years?

Super Mario Bros-1985

Super Mario Bros 2(Japan)-1986

Super Mario Bros 2 (USA)/Mario Bros 3-1988

Super Mario Land-1989

Super Mario World-1990

Super Mario Land 2-1992

Super Mario 64-1996

Super Mario Sunshine-2002

New Super Mario Bros-2006

Super Mario Galaxy-2007

New Super Mario Bros Wii-2009

Super Mario Galaxy 2-2010

Super Mario 3D Land-2011

New Super Mario Bros 2/U-2012

Super Mario 3D World-2013

The only time that Mario had long stretches of time between release were the mid 90s-early 2000s which is the N64/GC era and when Nintendo was doing its worst.

Xenoblade and Bayonetta didnt do shit for Japan, its not likely X or Bayo 2 will either.

PS3 was not carried by COD/FIFA, yes those games sold great on PS3 but there was also GTA, Assassins Creed, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Uncharted, God of War, Gran Turismo, LittleBigPlanet, Batman Arkham, Metal Gear Solid, Red Dead Redemption, Madden, Killzone, Resistance, Infamous, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Battlefield, Tales of, Dynasty Warriors, etc. It didnt rely on just a few games but rather a consistant schedule for its entire life.

1. Just like GC, Wii U lacks many multimedia features compared to the competition

2. Seems as tho most of the top selling Wii U games are hardcore or classic Nintendo franchises as well.

And about Smash thats exactly what I said, 3DS version would cause Wii U version to revert back to pre Wii levels.

I think it's pretty clear. You don't even have to be a fortune teller to predict how this gen is going to be.

1. PS4
2. XB1
3. Ouya
4. Wii U
