I predict in 5 years it will be hard to find anything but a very small 1080P TV. They still sold black and white ones in the 90's but few bought them.
4K is the future. The new streaming h.265 standard and faster Internet will help push it more too. But they do need a new cable to get 60p or my prefered 120p frame rate up. Not sure if HDMI is going to make it.
Personally, I find any TV over say 40" really should be 4K. (And yes, I have a larger 1080p one.)
I'm looking more forward to OLED, but it might just be me.
Cable providers are still sending a 1080i signal for hi-def. Bandwith caps & speed in the U.S. Make downloading in 4k impossible. Most people just got flat panel TV's in the last five years. 4K for the general public is nothing but a novelty just like 3D TV's. And like 3D, there is very little 4K content. Right now it is nothing but a rich man's toy. On a small screen, such as a phone or tablet, the extra resolution is just a waste.
So no, 1080p will be the standard for quite some time.
At the moment 4k is useless besides for PC gaming and even here its still does not make sense because of the power you need to get good FPS. (it is good for Photoshop etc tho)
There is simply nothing to watch in 4k. Old movies also have no information to fill a 4k movie file/disk because noone thought that we would ever need something like that.
So there is no chance to ever see Back to the Future, StarWars EP4-6 or Indiana Jones etc in 4k. Even 2000s movies often lack 4k source material. Then you have movies with CGI that was rendered in 1080p so when a movie will be in 4k the 3d effects will still be 1080p (because studios are dumb sometimes. They would need to remake those effects etc)
We also need movies with less motion blur and displays that generate less motion blur while showing the movies more than we need a higher resolution for movies. Movement resolution is often not even half the resolution of still images.
I dont know a single TV that offers 1080 when it shows normal moving images. Its only for static images or really slow slow-mo stuff. Thats why there is always slow-mo and stills shown in shops etc.
And mobile actually does not need more than 1080p I mean my 7" tablet is 720p my 50" TV is 1080p the image of my 7" tablet is 14x sharper than my TV's image that is more than enough.
So the only people that need 1080p+ are people that need alot of "space" on their screen for photoshop etc.

4k is pointless, most cable signal are at 720p top so why would you buy a 4k tv and a 4k cable box?

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.
These days tv's and other electronic products are made with planned obsolescence. Even though lot of products are advertised with really high life, such as tv's with 100,000 hours. Most of them end up failing in some way or another within just a number of years. Well that was my random observation.
Now to answer if i am interested in 4K. Not really. I'll wait for 8K and pick one up by 2035.
I have some excitement for 4k tv's. I've seen a few on displays at certain shops and they look pretty good. Although they usually have some random footage of an amazing vista showing while on display at shops...which isnt exactly what we watch 95% of the time. In fact we won't even get that demo footage...
And on the content side of things, its not looking very good...yet!We only starting to see an increase in 4k content...it will take a while before theirs a worthwhile library of easily accessible 4k content. Once the content is there and is compelling, I'll get more excited about it.
It's also a bit disappointing that companies are no longer pushing 3D... The main issue i had with 3D was that it wasn't as clear as non 3D. With 4k native res we can get a better 3D image.
Pshh, 4k... who wants to bother with that half-arsed resolution.
What about 8k, isn't anyone excited about that? :o
I know I am!
