Cable providers are still sending a 1080i signal for hi-def. Bandwith caps & speed in the U.S. Make downloading in 4k impossible. Most people just got flat panel TV's in the last five years. 4K for the general public is nothing but a novelty just like 3D TV's. And like 3D, there is very little 4K content. Right now it is nothing but a rich man's toy. On a small screen, such as a phone or tablet, the extra resolution is just a waste.

So no, 1080p will be the standard for quite some time.
