I think GTA III came pretty close. We will have to wait and see if there will ever be a game that will leave such a lasting impression. If there ever will be such a game, i'm pretty sure it hasn't been announced yet. Though Quantum Break could be really good.

Considering its metacritic score and that was back in a time where to many review places that was their first ever 10/10 rating. I would say it holds more merit. Review sites hand out 10/10 these days like nothing.

The second point is looking at yearly lists that any random person or gaming website puts up for 100 best games of all time or whatever number they choose. Sure OoT might not be #1 on that list, but it is constantly on the top 5 in practically every single list every year. Last of Us may be on top now, but lets look at that list in 10 years. Last of Us will most likely be not even in the top 10,. meanwhile OoT will still be in top 5 like it has through these last 15 years.

Seriously just go look back at top 100 game lists of review sites. It's always amusing looking at some of the games that make the top 5, just because they were thought awesome that year. Looking back its laughable. It's the games that continue to stay top 5 for years on years on years that are the best games of all time.

I'm pretty sure the point (at least what I gathered) of this thread was to ask if OOT would every be topped by review percentages, not whether or not OOT is considered the best game ever. If what I gathered was correct, it will never happen. The gaming media is much larger than it was back then, and consequently more opinions means a lower aggregate. Only 22 critics are listed on OOT's metacritic, versus 73 Critics for the Wii version of Twilight Princess.

In fairness, even though OoT is not in my top five Zeldas, much less top 5 games, it was revolutionary in terms of navigating 3D space.  The targeting sytem with the Z button became the standard and showed others how to make compelling combat in 3D.  If you played many other games at the time camera work was often atrocious and gameplay suffered from it.  OoT was an extremely polished game that stood out in its time as a standard bearer for game design.

I am not sure we could ever see that again unless there is a new frontier in gaming like 2D to 3D and a single game says "Here, this is how you do it" and makes everyone go "Ooooh!" again.

Here's an idea: make a poll asking people who only got around to playing Ocarina of Time once the N64 was no longer a current gen console, what their opinion on the game is, then make one where you only ask people who played it back when the N64 was still active. That way you can find out how big an influence nostalgia has on people's opinions of the game and how it would be received if it came out today.

Who is that site and why should I care? I can also compile my own list with the bestest games of all times and dedicate a site to it.

You'll see how foolish those gameranking metacritic lists are once you realize GTA IV is at the top of the lists.

What determines that OoT is better than MGS1? Nothing.

This is almost exactly what I wanted to say.

It may have been something special at the time but I don't see how people can still put it on a pedastal in 2014 and ask when it will be dethroned, I don't care for the game personally, probably because I only played it a few years ago and not when it was new which is why I maybe don't appreciate it as much, I wouldn't even include it in my top 50 games.

Perhaps it was the best game of its generation, nowadays there's better mobile/indie games, let alone all the amazing AA/AAA games we've had for the last few generations. It just seems obligatory to say it's the best game ever by now, I don't believe most of the people who say it's the best game still really think so, it's just their rose-tinted glasses getting in the way.

So I don't belive the game can be dethroned because for many people it simply never sat on the throne, the voice of the internet dwelling folk accounts for such a tiny perecentage of gamers, typically people find comfort in following and agreeing with the general consensus even if they don't really agree which is why even after all these years you still have people making out like Zelda: OoT is some sort of faultless masterpiece that can't be topped when really it was just a revolutionary game that's outdated and outclassed by today's standrads.
