Forums - Nintendo - IA Labs Loses Patent Portfolio to Nintendo After Nintendo Wins Patent Lawsuit

"IA Labs sued Nintendo back in 2010 for patent infringement. Nintendo successfully defended themselves and the judge ruled in their favor two years ago. IA Labs tried to appeal but was shot down, then ordered to pay Nintendo additional costs to Nintendo. IA Labs never paid, and was forced to sell its assets. In the process, Nintendo was given IA Labs entire patent portfolio as partial payment. Hear Nintendo’s response below."

Iwata (laughs).

Glad Nintendo won. I dislike those companies who just patent something and then sit on them in hopes that someone else infringes on them and becomes successful so they can sue for millions. Although, the patent was about 3D without glasses so Nintendo did infringe on the patent.

Nintendo didn't infringe on them.  If anyone did, it was Sharp.  They provided the parallax barrier screen for the 3DS...and many of their own phones too.

The rEVOLution is not being televised

Finally some positive Ninty news..  It's not like we get them very often...

"...Nintendo was given IA Labs entire patent portfolio..."
I read this earlier and was wondering how this could benefit Nintendo.
Couldn't really find any other information about it.

I never understood that ruling, since Nintendo licensed the tech from Sharp. Was Nintendo supposed to keep track of Sharp's patent infringements as well? Seems silly.

Glad to see Nintendo win this one though, patent trolls suck.

Yayy, glad to see nintendo win!!!

Here is a news story about the first time they sued Nintendo. IA Labs accused Nintendo of infringing on two patents, "Computer interactive isometric exercise system and method for operatively interconnecting the exercise system to a computer system for use as a peripheral" and "Force measurement system for an isometric exercise device", with technology used in the Wii, Wii Fit, Wii Fit Plus, the Wii Balance Board, Wii Remote, Wii Wheel, Wii MotionPlus, Wii Nunchuck and Wii Zapper.

What does the patent portfolio include?
