I think you're underestimating Japan.  Frankly, the last mega-hit game released in Japan was Pokemon D/P 72 weeks ago and since then they've only had like 3 million sellers:  Pokemon Mysterious Dungeon 2, Mario Party DS, and DQ IV re-re-release.  That doesn't look good at all.  This year they'll have DQ9 at the least, which will break the year-and-a-half dryspell.  I also expect better offerings than last year with or without DQ9.  Nintendo has a ton of money, so even though they are sticklers for quality there should be little excuse if they abandon the DS now in favor of making Wii games.

Besides, there will be a remodel of the system sooner or later (at least sooner than 2010) and that should rekindle sales in Japan.

Japan needs 8M. It has 22M sold, out of a population of 125M, this means that almost 1/5 people in Japan have bought a DS, and some surely share it.

Well, 8M. Last year, it sold 7.3M, and it seems to slow down, so 6M for this year, and then it breaks 30M during golden week.

USA

Needs 9M more sales. DS sold almost 10 last year (9.9) and seems to be selling as fast, perhaps faster, so I say it should make it within 09.

Europe(others):

Needs 6M only.

Roughly math by me, says it sold 12M last year. I think it might even sell 15M. This one will definately make it within the holiday seasons begin.

Others might get 40 M before Japan gets 30. The week Japan breaks 30, WW has already broken 100M.

by the end of 2008 ds will sell 30 million in eu and NA and by middle 2010 it will sell 30 mil in japan
