I think you're underestimating Japan.  Frankly, the last mega-hit game released in Japan was Pokemon D/P 72 weeks ago and since then they've only had like 3 million sellers:  Pokemon Mysterious Dungeon 2, Mario Party DS, and DQ IV re-re-release.  That doesn't look good at all.  This year they'll have DQ9 at the least, which will break the year-and-a-half dryspell.  I also expect better offerings than last year with or without DQ9.  Nintendo has a ton of money, so even though they are sticklers for quality there should be little excuse if they abandon the DS now in favor of making Wii games.

Besides, there will be a remodel of the system sooner or later (at least sooner than 2010) and that should rekindle sales in Japan.
