But tbh I have to agree.  Mario 3D World is more a hardcore game  than  COD or any other mainstream game is because well they are mainstream not hardcore. Stuff like Angry Birds for example is more hardcore than COD (because go back 20 years make it want a quarter for everytime you "fail" and then you have the original meaning of hardcore. Mario and Angry Birds etc. are hardcore games they just lost the INSERT COIN aspect.)

To be clear, games and systems are not, and cannot be, hardcore. Hardcore, by definition, applies to people, or as a synonym for "extreme."

So to say a system or game is "the most hardcore" is rather silly, on par with saying that lilly is "the most hardcore" plant, or pheasant is "the most hardcore" meat.

Unless the usage here is an even more nebulous "games/systems that appeal exclusively to the hardcore," which is equally silly.

So when I have 50+ Wii games and 15 WiiU games and a friend has 1 PS3 game. He is the extreme gamer and I am not?   How?

Hardcore is a term that makes sense when you talk about games. it does NOT make sense with vegetables etc...

A game where you constantly fail because of the difficulty or because of the level design (even if its just stupid unfair level design) is hardcore because you have to invest alot of time to master its mechanics and rules.
A shooter where the difficulty comes from other people (this has nothing to do with the game itself) is not hardcore you dont learn how to master the games mechanics as much as you learn how to beat other people and their playstyle. In this case not the game is hardcore.

I can always find a person that can kick my butt in Wii Sports etc. COD with its online just makes it easier to find them.  With enough time and effort I can also find a person that can fart louder than I can but this doesnt make farting automatically hardcore. Hardcore has nothing to do with simultanous competitive gaming at all.

Mario is hardcore even if the games became easier  but you still could make it into an arcade game and expect people to waste quarters. Same with angry birds or Just Dance style games (Remember the dance arcades?). Tetris also was and IS a hardcore game but by todays standards its not (does NOT make any sense at all)

A game can be casual (short burst gameplay) and hardcore at the same time.  The difference is it is either accessible (racing game etc) or not (rpg/strategy)
Again Angry Birds comes to mind. Its a casual hardcore game with accessible gameplay.

For the most part Nintendo games are accessible not casual  but the whole industry confused itself.

Unless you're going to invent some arbitrary and subjective litmus test for "purity" in gaming, none of these function as a description for games. Without a recognized or at the very least consistent definition, "hardcore game" is a useless term.

"Hardcore gamer," however, is actually useful, via 1b. To be a hardcore gamer simply means to be a fan of, or passionate about, playing games.

So, to be clear, there are no games or consoles that are inherently hardcore. There are, however, hardcore gamers, and that term has nothing to do with what specific kinds of games they play.
