Forums - Sales - Japan - Was it really that great of an idea to delay PS4s to 2014?

Some of you really have problems to remain on-topic. The topic beeing the Japanese console market and if they didn´t want to cash-in on GT6 and help PSV with PSTV, they could have simply shipped those Asia, Brazil and Saudi Arabia PS4 units to Japan instead.

Also PS4 launch lineup next year doesn´t look much better anyway, so I really don´t see any benefits You have also to consider that games like Yakuza would have helped keeping up the momentum after the launch hype started to fade.

Basically they would have the launch hype, sales momentum due to beeing December/New Year and early next year games like Yakuza would have helped to keep the system selling. And in the same time make it difficult to WiiU to pull off the sales they actually had the past two weeks.

Instead they launch in a weak period of the year and hoping that the launch hype will seal the deal.

Seems to me, it's more like you just want people to agree with you.  And if they don't, you accuse them of being off topic.  We're discussing the very topic in your OP.  If you can't handle disagreement, don't create threads .

Sony know japan market better than we all so never worry for them...

Nintendo Systems including the Gamecube have always sold amazingly in December in Japan no matter the competition.

To me it seems you just like making excuses. US sales aren´t relevent to how the 2014 launch may affect the Japanese console market. Best example beeing X360 last gen.

@Der Nebel

The absence of PS4 is quite obvious a bone to PSV and GT6 with Gran Tourismo beeing Sonys biggest franchise in Japan and beeing launched perfectly timed for the holiday season is quite obviously their focus this year. It didn´t work out, sure, but please don´t pretend that it wasn´t their supposed ace in the pocket in the console market this year in Japan.

Also PSVTV is a Japan exclusive so far for a reason.

The reason is quite simple, Japans traditional videogame market has shifted largely to handhelds, therefore they didn´t want to overshadow the already struggling PSV even more with the PS4. Instead they launched a new revision PSV2000 (Japan exclusive as well so far) and even developed a spin-off console named PSVTV to help it out and give it another big opportunity to change its course before the next console launches.

Or do you really think the Brazilian, Saudi Arabian and Asian market are more important? Please give me a break and stop buying every PR excuse from Sony.

I find it always so amusing how people think that manufacturing electronics is as easy as baking cackes. Sony had to challenge MS for NA Region for that was where Microsoft dominated for the past 8 years, and since the PS4 sold more units so far in that Region it paid off.

And no matter when they launch in Japan they will dominate that market, because nobody cares for the Xbox in Japan, and even in Europe to certain extent. Thats why they delayed the European launch as well.

And another thing is why do you think they helped Nintendo with delaying the system?

The point is there was no need to produce a single extra unit and they could have still have supplied Japan. If they wanted they could have simply shipped the units from far less important markets like Brazil, Asia etc. to Japan instead. But this is something that seems to get ignored from apologists. The reason is quit obvious if you actually look at  Sonys actions (PSV2000, PSVTV, PSVTVGod Eater bundle and PSV2000 FFX/X-2 bundle (12.26) right before the important new years business)

Also looking at PSVs lackluster performance in Japan, in a market that by a wide margin prefered handhelds for atleast 9 years now (PSP even ending up with a similar userbase as PS2), I wouldn´t be too sure about any systems performance that also includes your expectation for PS4 in Japan. When 3DS struggled in 2011 the same was said about PSV and we know how that turned out.

He probably feels they helped Nintendo by leaving the opening there for a new home-console at the gift-giving season to be soley filled by Nintendo, even if Japan is handheld central that might not be all that small a victory. That part being obvious I'll also add that some of Nintendo's reputaton for not being "hardcore enough the bro-dudes" likely means ALOT less there since Japanese gamers, to my knowledge, tend to be more willing to play cutesy games (provided it offers high quality gameplay). That means Nintendo had a much bigger opening in Japan than Sony may have been thinking about.

Moreover though, the big question is: How will Japanese gamers feel about Sony prioritizing "outsiders" over them... If that becomes a pressure point for Sony they may be in trouble. Heh, hopefully if that does happen and the Wii-U gets a number of games "intended for Japan only" Nintendo will do what they hinted at doing more in future - translating smaller games for other companies - Nintendo may have fairly good luck with Japanophile gamers.

The delay won't affect anything at the end of the day Wii U won't have FF XV, MSG5, Yakuza games, Kingdom Hearts 3 and other popular franchises in japan like Devil May Cry or Resident Evil.

PS4 will dominate the 3 major markets: USA, Europe and Japan.

Oh, of course Sony didn't release the PS4 to help GT6...and why exactly did they limit that move Japan? I don't know if you remember this but incidently GT6 saw a worldwide release this december not japan only.

Also it really makes a ton of sense for Sony to hold back the PS4 in Japan to help Vita and Vita TV, it's not like the PS4 gives new functions to the Vita and thus helped move Vitas in the west...oh wait. And arguably the best Vita TV feature will only be available once the PS4 is out, so yeah... it really helps the vita tv a ton that you can't get a ps4 yet.

No those countries aren't more important but you don't need to release the console with games especially made for those countries for it to sell.
