The point is there was no need to produce a single extra unit and they could have still have supplied Japan. If they wanted they could have simply shipped the units from far less important markets like Brazil, Asia etc. to Japan instead. But this is something that seems to get ignored from apologists. The reason is quit obvious if you actually look at Sonys actions (PSV2000, PSVTV, PSVTVGod Eater bundle and PSV2000 FFX/X-2 bundle (12.26) right before the important new years business)
Also looking at PSVs lackluster performance in Japan, in a market that by a wide margin prefered handhelds for atleast 9 years now (PSP even ending up with a similar userbase as PS2), I wouldn´t be too sure about any systems performance that also includes your expectation for PS4 in Japan. When 3DS struggled in 2011 the same was said about PSV and we know how that turned out.
