Forums - Gaming - Xbox One + PS4 V. Their Predecessors (toasty controversy)

CPU

 I'm not a tech guy.

RAM

Both the Xbox 360 and PS3 have 512 MB of RAM while the PS4 and Xbox One are identical at 8 GB of RAM. The PS4 and Xbox One are 1,600% more advanced than their predecessors in this category.

Cores

The PS3 has 9 cores and the Xbox 360 has 3 cores. Both the Xbox One and PS4 have 8 cores which mean the PS4 has been downgraded by -12% and the Xbox One has been upgraded by 266%.

Wi-Fi

Xbox Systems have improved and better Wi-Fi than PS systems.

Controllers

The PS3 can handle 7 people playing; the PS4 can handle only 4. That is a -43% decline in the number of players. The Xbox One can handle 8 players at a time while the Xbox 360 can only handle 4 players. That is an increase of 100%

Overall

I know this is cloudy but I’d say that the PS4 is about 16.88 times as powerful as the PS3 and the Xbox One is about 19.58 times as powerful as the Xbox 360. HOWEVER about 10% of the Xbox One’s power is used on Kinect making game performance only 17.622 times as powerful. As you can see, with the upgraded CPU, the Xbox One is more powerful than the PS4. That is why the Xbox One cost more money (besides the fact it comes with a camera).

but you're saying that the Xbox and ps4 both have the same increase in RAM but no difference between DDR3 and DDR5 memory? Never mind you said you aren't a tech guy.

Also did you just add up the extra %s and total how much better one system was based on that? so the xbox gains 266% from the number of cores and a further 100% from doubleing the number of controllers connectable? Just wondering?

Btw I left wi fi in there because the Xbox360 all the way til the slim model didn't have Wi Fi without buying an adaptor, so you can say the X1 has infinate% more wi fi than the previous generation, that should really fluff out your end calculations too.

I took the percentages and added/subtracted them. For instance if xbox one had twice as powerful cpu  as the 360 and three times as powerful gpu I would say that xbox one is 5 times as powerful as the 360. I did not factor in controllers/wifi etc. Only pure strength. I even subtracted the 10% used for kinect. The only thing I didn't factor in is the GPUs of each console which would make ps4 about just as big as an upgrade as the Xbox One. They're almost completely equal.

ah okie, so the number of cores on the CPU die didn't come into the end result so? Because that is one that would be hard to put that big a value on going from a tri core system to the Jaguar in the X1. imo!

The PS3 doesn't have 9 cores. It has 1 core and 8 SPUs (6 usable, one for the OS and one disabled by default to improve yields). You can't compare a normal core with a SPU since they are completely different.

And come on, you ain't serious about these math, are you?

The blu-player in the PS4 has much better hardware than that of the PS3. Beside reliability the speed has also improved by 3x to in a total 6x (PS3 had a 2x BD reader).

There is just too many flaws in this thread though with aid of the community you can actually provide better comparisons

Looking at this I came up with several conclusions:

CPU frequency

Xbox One and PS4 have a far lower CPU frequency than its predecessors. That's a good thing right? It can load things at a quicker pace I'm guessing.

PS4 has 100% advantage on PS3 while the Xbox One has a 92% advantage on the Xbox 360.

What the heck are you talking about? Lower frequency = less operations per second, hence less power

ps: didnt the ps3 had 256 mb RAM?

This is brilliant.

Lol, I think you match my parents as far tech knowledge toastboy

It's a joke thread...

Anyway the ps4 blu-ray player isn't all that much faster then the ps3 one. ps3 one is CLV, while ps4 has a CAV drive. A 6x CAV drive is between 1.25x (inner rim) and 3x faster (outer rim) then a 2x CLV drive. Seek times are much improved though since the rotational speed doesn't have to change. 6x CAV is 90mbps to 216mbps compared to a constant 72mbps of a 2x CLV drive.
The 360 had a 12x CAV DVD drive ranging between 66mbps to 132mbps, xbox one also has a 6x CAV blu-ray drive drive.

For the OP to put it into nonsensical percentages:
360 to xbox one -> 36% to 63% increase in optical drive read speed -> avg 50% increase or 150% of previous gen.
ps3 to ps4 -> 25% to 200% increase in optical drive read speed -> avg 112% increase or 212% of previous gen.

PS3-PS4:  1.8/.2 = 9.2

360-xbone: 1.3/.25 = 5.2

Even those are exaggerated because they make far less use of their theoretical FLOPS than older GPUs. AMD GPUs have four sub-units per unit and not all four are occupied at once in real workloads.
