Honestly, I never noticed that. 

I sincerely hope Wii U turns out to be as durable as the Wii in the long run. My 2009 Wii has fallen off tables multiple times from people tripping over Gamecube controller cords, but still runs perfectly. Hell, one time it fell during gameplay and the game didn't even freeze...

And ur right that PS3 in 2007 sold higher than Wii U will in 2013 but Wii U is having a better holiday. Here are the first two weeks of December in any given year for PS3.

2007-40k & 60k

2008-30k each

2009-55k & 75k

2010-40k & 50k

2011-45k & 65k

2012-35k & 45k

2013-25k each

In comparison Wii U has done 50k and 75k in the first two weeks of december this year which beats PS3 in every year except 2009. Whether or not it continues that momentum going into next year remains to be seen but one thing is certain its lineup in the first half of 2014 is much better than it was this year. Wii Fit U retail, DKC Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8 and maybe Hyrule Warriors should ensure it doesnt fall off a cliff again.

It's good that it's selling more, but I also wonder about it's lows... as the wii-u looks like it is more erratic.. i.e 2-5k a week.. how low did the PS3 go within it's launch year?

That combined with the cost differences at the same timeframe, would probably make for interesting picture. I guess thats whats so fascinating about sales figures, there are so many variables... :D

Well I just went back and looked at PS3 sales each week of 2007 in Japan so ill give a brief summary.

PS3 launched in Nov 2006 and by the end of January weekly sales hit a baseline of 20k and remained there until mid March when Dynasty Warriors Gundam released and boosted sales to 45k. The boost was short lived and sales quickly dropped back down, from April-Oct the baseline was 10-15k even dropping below 10k on a handful of weeks and in late July Hot Shots Golf gave it a boost to 35k but again sales quickly dropped back down. In Nov+Dec weekly sales averaged 50k due to the holiday and big game releases like Dynasty Warriors 6, Pro Evo Soccer 08 and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue.

So PS3 in 2007 was in a similar situation as Wii U this year. PS3 was most expensive console and PS2/PSP/DS/Wii were getting great support, it had a low baseline with the occassional boost when a big title released (Dynasty Warriors Gundum/Hot shots Golf) and a solid boost at the end of the year with GT5 Prologue/Dynasty Warriors 6/Pro Evo 08. Compare that to Wii U, the most expensive console and PS3/PSP/Vita/3DS recieved great support, a low baseline with an occassional boost from a big game (Dragon Quest X/Pikmin 3) and a solid end of the year with Wii Party U, Dragon Quest X expansion and Mario 3D World.

How is 74K in one week bad in Japan? Yeah, the 3DS sold 180K in one week, but clearly the 3DS is the dominant platform in Japan, so it's expected to sell that much.

But the Wii U has been the best selling console in Japan for 6 weeks now. The PS3 only sold 24K and it's nearing the holidays as well. In fact, in December 12th - December 15th, the Wii U sold more than all the consoles below it COMBINED. How is that bad again?

And indeed it is perfectly acceptable to compare it to other consoles.  The difference being that this isn't about other consoles.  It's about the Wii U at one point selling between 3k-5k per week and is now doing quite well.  That's a remarkable turn around.   

Is 75k a high sales level for a home console in Japan on the grand scale of things?  No.
Is 75k a high sales level for a home console in Japan this year?  Yes.
Is 75k a high sales level for a home console in Japan that was once selling under 5k per week?  Yes.
